Agassiz's Corydoras, Corydoras agassizii, is a South American armored catfish native to the Amazon Basin, with a natural distribution that includes Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and neighboring regions. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, forest streams, floodplain lakes, and flooded forests with sandy substrates, leaf litter, and submerged wood. These habitats are typically warm, soft, slightly acidic, and rich in organic material, providing excellent conditions for bottom-dwelling fish.

Adult Agassiz's Corydoras typically reaches about 2.5 to 3 inches in length. The body is elongated and streamlined with a pale silver to creamy white base coloration. A bold black stripe runs from the tip of the snout through the eye and along the upper flank to the base of the tail, while the back and upper sides are decorated with irregular black blotches and marbled markings that create an attractive reticulated pattern. The dorsal fin usually carries a prominent black patch, and the caudal fin is marked with rows of dark spots or bars. This striking combination of facial stripe, mottled body, and patterned fins makes Corydoras agassizii one of the most recognizable and attractive Corydoras species.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper group. Agassiz's Corydoras are highly social and should be maintained in groups of six or more to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. A fine sand substrate is strongly recommended, allowing them to sift through the bottom naturally without damaging their sensitive barbels. Driftwood, leaf litter, plants, and shaded areas help recreate their native habitat while leaving open areas for foraging.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.2 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Good oxygenation, regular water changes, and consistently low nitrate levels are important for long-term health.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature, Agassiz's Corydoras feeds on insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and organic material sifted from the substrate. In the aquarium they readily accept quality sinking pellets, wafers, frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp, along with other prepared foods. They should always be target-fed rather than expected to survive on leftover food from other fish.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Agassiz's Corydoras is an ideal community fish and coexists well with tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, small gouramis, and other non-aggressive species. Their active schooling behavior and constant foraging make them an engaging addition to planted and South American community aquariums.

Breeding is readily achievable in captivity. Like most Corydoras, they are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs on aquarium glass, plants, or other smooth surfaces. Adults provide no parental care, and eggs should be removed or protected if fry are to be raised successfully.

Corydoras agassizii is a beautiful and hardy bottom-dwelling catfish that combines intricate patterning, peaceful behavior, and constant activity. Its distinctive facial stripe, marbled body, and sociable nature make Agassiz's Corydoras an outstanding choice for planted aquariums and Amazonian community setups.
