Amapa Tetra

The Amapa Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon amapaensis, is a small, eye-catching species of tetra native to the Amapá region in Brazil. It inhabits slow-moving streams and rivers, typically in areas with dense vegetation and soft, acidic water. This species is highly valued by aquarists for its striking appearance and peaceful nature.

Adult Amapa Tetras typically reach about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length. They are distinguished by their metallic, silver body and bright red stripe running from the nose through to the tail. The bright red coloration is flanked by a thin white line, giving it a sharp and attractive look. Their large eyes and slender body shape add to their overall appeal, making them a popular choice for small to medium-sized aquariums.

A tank of at least 10 to 15 gallons is suitable for a small group. These fish should be kept in groups of six or more to reduce stress and promote natural schooling behavior. To mimic their natural environment, provide fine-leaved plants, driftwood, and leaf litter, and include dim lighting or floating plants to help them feel secure and highlight their colors.

Water parameters for the Amapa Tetra should include a temperature range of 74 to 82°F (23 to 28°C), a pH of 5.5 to 7.0, and soft, slightly acidic water. Proper water quality is important, and regular maintenance with gentle filtration is recommended to ensure their health.

Feeding Hyphessobrycon amapaensis is straightforward, as they accept a variety of small foods. Offer high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Their small mouths require fine food particles.

The Amapa Tetra is a peaceful species that does well in community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive fish, such as rasboras, pencilfish, and other tetras. Avoid keeping them with larger or more boisterous species that may cause them stress.

Breeding the Amapa Tetra in captivity is possible but rare. They are egg-scattering fish and will need soft, slightly acidic water and dense plants or spawning mops to encourage breeding. Once eggs are laid, the adults should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.
