Amazon Sword 'Compacta'

Amazon Sword ‘Compacta’, Echinodorus ‘Compacta’, is a cultivated dwarf sword plant developed from South American Echinodorus stock. Unlike the full-sized Amazon Swords that can quickly dominate an aquarium, ‘Compacta’ was selected for its shorter, denser growth and more manageable proportions. It provides the broad-leaved, lush appearance aquarists expect from an Amazon Sword while fitting comfortably into considerably smaller planted aquariums.

In the aquarium, Amazon Sword ‘Compacta’ develops a dense rosette of broad, lance-shaped leaves emerging from a central crown. The foliage ranges from bright to medium green, with new leaves sometimes emerging a lighter green before darkening as they mature. Its leaves are substantially shorter and more compact than those of standard Amazon Swords, generally keeping the plant around 6 to 12 inches tall depending on growing conditions. The dense, symmetrical rosette creates an attractive bushy appearance that works exceptionally well as a midground plant or smaller centerpiece.

Amazon Sword ‘Compacta’ should be planted directly into the substrate with its roots buried but the crown left exposed. Burying the crown can cause rot and eventually kill the plant. Moderate lighting is sufficient for healthy growth, although stronger lighting generally encourages denser, more compact foliage. Because of its manageable size, it works particularly well in medium aquariums where a standard Amazon Sword would eventually become overwhelming.

Like other Echinodorus, Amazon Sword ‘Compacta’ is a heavy root feeder. Nutrient-rich aquarium soil provides excellent growing conditions, while plants maintained in sand or gravel benefit greatly from regular root tab supplementation. Water-column fertilization can provide additional nutrients, but maintaining a healthy root zone is considerably more important. CO₂ supplementation is not required, making this an excellent option for low-tech planted aquariums, although added CO₂ will encourage faster and fuller growth.

Water conditions are flexible and forgiving. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Amazon Sword ‘Compacta’ adapts well to a broad range of freshwater aquarium conditions, with stability and adequate nutrition being more important than achieving specific parameters.

Growth is moderate once the plant becomes established. Newly introduced specimens may lose some older leaves while adapting from emersed nursery growth to fully submerged aquarium conditions. This is normal, and healthy plants will begin producing new submerged leaves from the center of the crown. Older or damaged outer leaves can be removed individually at their base rather than cutting the leaves midway.

Propagation typically occurs through flower stalks or runners that produce small daughter plants. Once a plantlet develops several leaves and a healthy root system, it can be carefully separated from the parent and replanted. Mature specimens maintained under good conditions may produce multiple plantlets over time.

Amazon Sword ‘Compacta’ is compatible with virtually all peaceful community fish and invertebrates. Its broad leaves provide excellent shelter and resting surfaces for small fish, shrimp, and bottom-dwelling species. Large herbivorous fish or particularly enthusiastic digging cichlids may damage or uproot the plant, but otherwise its sturdy foliage holds up extremely well in community aquariums.

Echinodorus ‘Compacta’ is an excellent choice for aquarists who love the classic appearance of an Amazon Sword but do not want a plant that eventually takes over the entire aquarium. Its broad green foliage, compact rosette growth, easy care requirements, and ability to thrive without injected CO₂ make the Amazon Sword ‘Compacta’ a versatile centerpiece or midground plant for a wide range of freshwater aquariums.
