American Frogbit, Limnobium spongia, is a floating aquatic plant native to North America, where it occurs in ponds, lakes, slow-moving rivers, and wetlands across much of the United States. It grows in calm, nutrient-rich waters with little to no current, often forming floating colonies in sheltered areas with full to partial sunlight.
Limnobium spongia produces round to slightly heart-shaped floating leaves that are bright to medium green with a soft, velvety surface. The leaves typically range from about 1 to 2 inches across and rest flat on the water surface. Beneath each leaf, the plant develops long, feathery root systems that hang into the water column. These roots can grow several inches long and provide both nutrient uptake and shelter for fish, fry, and invertebrates.
In aquariums and ponds, American Frogbit spreads by producing runners that form new plantlets, allowing it to quickly cover portions of the water surface. It is best suited to setups with calm water, as strong surface agitation can damage leaves or inhibit growth. Moderate to high lighting encourages healthy leaf development, while very intense light without nutrient balance can lead to smaller or stressed growth.
Water conditions are flexible. Limnobium spongia thrives in temperatures between 68 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit and tolerates a pH range from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline. Soft to moderately hard water is suitable. Stability and nutrient availability are more important than exact parameter targets.
American Frogbit feeds directly from the water column and benefits from dissolved nutrients. In aquariums with low nutrient levels, growth may slow or leaves may yellow. In nutrient-rich systems, it can grow rapidly and may require regular thinning to prevent excessive surface coverage and light blockage to submerged plants.
This plant is highly compatible with community fish and invertebrates. Its hanging root systems provide excellent shelter for fry and shrimp, and it helps absorb excess nutrients, contributing to improved water quality. However, if allowed to overgrow, it can significantly reduce light penetration.
American Frogbit is a hardy, fast-spreading floating plant valued for its natural appearance and functional benefits. Its ability to provide shade, shelter, and nutrient uptake makes it a popular choice for both aquariums and outdoor water features, provided its growth is managed appropriately.
