Anubias congensis is a freshwater aroid native to Central Africa, where it occurs in regions of Cameroon, Gabon, and the Congo Basin. It grows along shaded riverbanks, stream margins, and periodically flooded forest areas, often rooted among rocks, wood, or in crevices where water flow is gentle to moderate. These habitats are typically warm, stable, and shaded, with soft to moderately hard water and minimal direct sunlight.

In the aquarium, Anubias congensis is distinguished by its long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves that can reach 10 to 16 inches in length. The leaves are deep green, smooth, and slightly leathery, with a graceful arching form that differs from the broader leaves of more common Anubias species. The plant grows from a thick horizontal rhizome, producing leaves at intervals and forming a loose, spreading structure over time.

Anubias congensis should be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape rather than planted directly into substrate. The rhizome must remain exposed, as burying it can lead to rot. Once attached, it anchors itself over time and requires little maintenance. It is best suited to medium and large aquariums where its longer leaves can be displayed without crowding.

Lighting requirements are low to moderate. The plant tolerates low light well and does not require intense illumination. Excessive light can encourage algae growth on the leaves, especially given its slow growth rate. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal, helping keep the leaves clean and free of debris.

Water conditions are flexible as long as they remain stable. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Anubias congensis does not require CO₂ supplementation but benefits from clean water and consistent nutrient availability.

This species is a slow grower and primarily absorbs nutrients from the water column. Occasional liquid fertilization supports healthy leaf development, but heavy dosing is unnecessary. Because of its slow growth, trimming is minimal and usually limited to removing older leaves.

Anubias congensis is highly compatible with fish and invertebrates. Its tough leaves resist grazing, making it suitable even in tanks with species that may damage softer plants. It provides shelter and structure without requiring intensive care.

Anubias congensis is a hardy, elegant plant that offers a more refined, elongated leaf shape compared to common Anubias varieties. Its durability, low light tolerance, and distinctive form make it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a reliable, low-maintenance plant with a natural, flowing appearance.
