Betta sp. Api Api ‘Jade’ is a rare wild Betta from Sumatra, Indonesia, belonging to the Betta coccina complex. It originates from highly acidic peat-swamp habitats characterized by dark tannin-stained water, dense leaf litter, submerged roots, branches, and thick forest canopy. These environments are typically extremely soft and nutrient-poor, with very little water movement and extensive organic material covering the substrate.

Adult Betta sp. Api Api ‘Jade’ typically reaches about 1.5 to 2 inches in length. Mature males are exceptionally colorful, displaying a vivid scarlet to fiery orange-red base coloration across the head, body, and fins. The center and rear portion of the body is covered with brilliant metallic jade-green to turquoise-blue scales, creating a striking jewel-like patch that contrasts dramatically against the red body. This iridescence can shift between emerald, turquoise, aqua, and electric blue depending on lighting and viewing angle. The caudal fin is broad and intensely red-orange with a delicate pale blue to turquoise outer edge, while the elongated anal fin combines rich red coloration with darker inner areas and brilliant blue-green edging. The dorsal fin is similarly red-orange and may develop an especially striking turquoise-white margin. Males also display elongated red pelvic fins tipped in bright white to blue-white. Females are generally smaller and more subdued, though mature females can still develop attractive red and iridescent coloration.

A tank of at least 10 gallons is suitable for a pair, with larger aquariums recommended for groups. The aquarium should be heavily structured with driftwood, fine branches, caves, dense plants, floating vegetation, and plenty of leaf litter. Subdued lighting helps the fish feel secure while also bringing out the remarkable metallic coloration of mature males. Water movement should remain gentle, and a tightly fitted lid is essential because wild Bettas are excellent jumpers.

Water conditions should reflect their specialized peat-swamp origins. Temperatures between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with very soft, acidic water strongly preferred. A pH between approximately 4.5 and 6.5 is ideal, with very low carbonate hardness. Botanicals such as dried leaves, seed pods, and natural driftwood are highly beneficial, helping create the tannin-rich conditions characteristic of their natural habitat. Stability is especially important, and sudden changes in water chemistry should be avoided.

Betta sp. Api Api ‘Jade’ is a micropredator that naturally feeds on tiny insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, worms, and other small aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they thrive on frozen and live foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized foods. Some individuals will accept high-quality pellets, but regular frozen or live foods are strongly recommended to develop the intense red coloration and metallic jade-green iridescence for which this form is prized.

Temperament is relatively peaceful but territorial. Males will display toward rivals and may defend preferred areas of the aquarium, particularly during breeding. Compatible pairs can be maintained together when abundant cover is provided, while larger groups require considerably more space and numerous visual barriers. They are best suited to species-focused aquariums or carefully selected communities containing very small, peaceful fish that tolerate extremely soft and acidic water.

Betta sp. Api Api ‘Jade’ is a bubble-nesting species. Males construct nests beneath floating plants, leaves, or other protected areas near the surface. Following spawning, the male tends the eggs and developing larvae until the fry become free-swimming. Very soft acidic water, minimal disturbance, dense surface cover, and abundant microscopic foods for newly free-swimming fry provide the best conditions for successful reproduction.

Betta sp. Api Api ‘Jade’ is an extraordinary wild Betta whose coloration rivals even the most elaborate domesticated varieties. The combination of a fiery scarlet-orange body and fins, brilliant jade-green and turquoise metallic scaling, contrasting pale blue fin edging, and white-tipped pelvic fins gives mature males an unmistakable appearance. For aquarists interested in rare wild Bettas and authentic blackwater aquariums, the Api Api ‘Jade’ Betta is a truly exceptional centerpiece species.
