Hongslo's Apistogramma, Apistogramma hongsloi, is a South American dwarf cichlid native to the upper Orinoco River Basin of Colombia and Venezuela, particularly within the Río Meta and Río Vichada drainages. It inhabits slow-moving forest streams, flooded margins, and blackwater tributaries with soft sandy bottoms, dense leaf litter, submerged roots, and fallen branches. These waters are typically warm, soft, acidic, and stained a tea-like color from decomposing vegetation.
Adult males typically reach 3 to 3.5 inches in length, while females remain considerably smaller at around 2 inches. Males develop an elongated, elegant body with extended dorsal, anal, and caudal fin rays that become increasingly pronounced with age. Their base coloration ranges from silvery cream to pale gold, overlaid with brilliant pink, salmon, and reddish-orange hues that intensify across the face, chest, and flanks. Iridescent blue scales shimmer across the head and body under proper lighting, while a bold black lateral stripe and distinct shoulder spot provide striking contrast. The dorsal fin is edged in vibrant orange to crimson, often with blue highlights between the rays, and the tail displays attractive red spotting or banding. Females are much more subdued, exhibiting tan to yellow coloration with a distinct black lateral stripe and developing a brilliant yellow breeding dress accented by bold black markings when guarding eggs or fry.
A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a single pair, while larger aquariums can comfortably house multiple territories when carefully aquascaped. Fine sand is essential, as these cichlids naturally sift the substrate while foraging. Driftwood, leaf litter, caves, coconut shells, and dense planting help recreate their natural habitat while providing the cover necessary for breeding territories. Floating plants are also beneficial, as they diffuse lighting and help these fish display their best coloration.
Water conditions should remain exceptionally clean and stable. Temperatures between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH range of approximately 5.5 to 7.0 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. While captive-bred specimens are generally adaptable, breeding success is greatest in softer, more acidic water with consistently low nitrate levels.
Hongslo's Apistogramma is an opportunistic micropredator in nature, feeding on insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms, and other small aquatic invertebrates collected from leaf litter and the substrate. In the aquarium they readily accept quality micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia, and other meaty prepared foods. A varied, protein-rich diet produces the best coloration, conditioning, and spawning success.
Temperament is peaceful but territorial, particularly during breeding. They are excellent candidates for carefully planned South American community aquariums with small tetras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, Corydoras, Otocinclus, and other peaceful species that occupy different areas of the aquarium. Males will establish territories and may display aggressively toward rival males, while females become highly protective when guarding eggs and fry.
Breeding is relatively straightforward and is one of the most rewarding aspects of keeping this species. Apistogramma hongsloi is a cave-spawning cichlid, with the female depositing adhesive eggs inside small caves or crevices. She remains with the eggs and fry, providing nearly all parental care while the male patrols the surrounding territory. Under favorable conditions the fry become free-swimming after about a week and readily accept newly hatched brine shrimp and other fine foods.
Apistogramma hongsloi is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful dwarf cichlids in the hobby. Its vivid pink and red coloration, shimmering blue highlights, graceful finnage, and fascinating breeding behavior make it an exceptional centerpiece for planted aquariums and authentic South American biotope displays.
