Assam Badis

The Badis assamensis, commonly known as the Assam Badis, is a captivating freshwater fish species native to parts of India and Bangladesh. Specifically found in the Brahmaputra River basin, they inhabit slow-moving waters, including streams and swamps.

Physically, the Assam Badis is characterized by its elongated body and vibrant coloration. Males typically display more intense colors, featuring shades of red, blue, and green, especially during courtship and spawning. They typically grow to a size of about 2 to 3 inches (5-7.5 cm).

In their natural habitat, Assam Badis thrive in densely planted aquariums with areas for swimming and hiding spots provided by plants and small caves. They prefer soft to slightly hard water conditions, and maintaining a stable and clean environment with proper filtration contributes to their overall well-being.

Known for their territorial behavior, Assam Badis are best kept in a species-only tank or with very small, peaceful tankmates. They are not suitable for community aquariums due to their territorial nature. A well-balanced diet, including live or frozen foods like small insects and microorganisms, meets their nutritional needs.

Maintaining water conditions within the range of 72-79°F (22-26°C) and a pH level between 6.0 to 7.5 is advisable. Regular water changes and proper filtration contribute to their health and vitality.

Breeding Assam Badis in captivity is possible but can be challenging due to their specific requirements. Creating a breeding tank with soft, acidic water and providing hiding spots with dense vegetation encourage successful spawning. Males intensify their colors during courtship.
