Aurora Tetra

Aurora Tetra, Moenkhausia aurora, is a South American characin native to the upper Rio Xingu Basin in Brazil. It inhabits clear, moderately to swiftly flowing tributaries with sandy bottoms, scattered rounded stones, submerged roots, and patches of aquatic vegetation. Unlike many blackwater tetras, this species is associated with clearer waters that are well oxygenated and bordered by dense tropical rainforest.

Adult Aurora Tetras typically reach about 1.5 to 1.75 inches in length. They possess a sleek, laterally compressed body with a brilliant silver base that shimmers with pink, lavender, and golden iridescence depending on the angle of the light. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are washed with vibrant orange to reddish-orange, while the eye often glows with a reddish-gold hue that complements the warm fin coloration. Mature males are noticeably more colorful than females, developing deeper red fins and stronger iridescent highlights, whereas females are slightly deeper-bodied with a more subdued appearance. Their constantly shifting metallic colors give the impression of the northern lights, inspiring the common name "Aurora Tetra."

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper school, though larger aquariums allow for more natural behavior. Aurora Tetras should be maintained in groups of at least eight to ten individuals, where they become far more confident and display their best coloration. A dark substrate, driftwood, scattered leaf litter, patches of aquatic plants, and open swimming space create an ideal environment while helping their metallic colors stand out.

Water conditions should remain stable and exceptionally clean. Temperatures between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Good water movement, excellent filtration, and regular water changes help replicate their naturally oxygen-rich habitat and keep them in peak condition.

In the wild, Aurora Tetras feed on small aquatic insects, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and zooplankton. In the aquarium they readily accept quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and other appropriately sized foods. A varied diet rich in quality frozen and live foods enhances both coloration and breeding condition.

Aurora Tetras are peaceful, active schooling fish that make excellent additions to community aquariums. They coexist well with Corydoras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, peaceful dwarf cichlids, rasboras, small gouramis, and other similarly sized characins. Males frequently spar through harmless displays, intensifying their colors and flaring their fins without causing injury.

Breeding is possible in captivity but is not commonly attempted. Like many characins, they are egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Adults provide no parental care and should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Soft, slightly acidic water and subdued lighting generally produce the best results.

With its glowing metallic body, fiery orange fins, and peaceful schooling behavior, Moenkhausia aurora is one of the most elegant recent additions to the aquarium hobby. The Aurora Tetra offers a unique blend of understated beauty and constant activity, making it an outstanding choice for planted aquariums and peaceful South American community displays.
