The Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a fascinating neotenic salamander native to Mexico. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls retain their larval characteristics throughout life, keeping their external gills and aquatic lifestyle. In the aquarium hobby, they are prized for their unusual appearance, ease of care, and the wide variety of color morphs now available through captive breeding.

Wild Type – This is the most natural-looking axolotl, similar to wild individuals in Mexico. They are typically dark brown or gray with lighter speckling, and they may have hints of green, gold, or black across the body.

Leucistic – Often confused with albinos, leucistic axolotls are pale pink to white with dark eyes. Their gills are often a soft pink or red, and they are among the most popular morphs in the hobby.

Albino – True albino axolotls lack pigment entirely and have pinkish-white bodies with red or pink eyes. Some variations include golden albinos, which show a shimmering yellow-gold tone under proper lighting.

In addition to these base morphs, we also offer GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) versions of each: Wild Type, Leucistic, and Albino. GFP axolotls have been genetically modified to express a jellyfish protein that causes their skin to fluoresce bright green under blacklight or blue light. This trait does not harm them and is passed down to offspring.

Axolotls grow to around 10–12 inches in length and require cool, clean, well-filtered water. They do best in tanks of at least 20 gallons with gentle flow and minimal current. They are carnivorous and thrive on a varied diet of earthworms, bloodworms, and high-quality sinking pellets designed for carnivorous fish or amphibians.

Important: Axolotls should never be kept with fish. Fish are notorious for nipping at their delicate external gills, which can cause severe injury, infection, and long-term stress. For this reason, axolotls should be housed either alone or only with other axolotls of similar size.

Axolotls are sensitive to warm water, so temperatures should remain between 60 and 70°F (16–21°C). They are best kept in species-only aquariums where their unique needs can be fully met.

Ambystoma mexicanum (Axolotl) is an iconic and charismatic species, and with morphs like Wild Type, Leucistic, Albino, and their GFP counterparts, they offer a unique and stunning addition to coldwater aquariums.
