Bamboo Shrimp-XL

Bamboo Shrimp, Atyopsis moluccensis, is a large freshwater filter-feeding shrimp native to Southeast Asia, with a natural distribution that includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and surrounding regions. It inhabits clear streams and rivers with moderate to strong current, where individuals position themselves on rocks, submerged wood, roots, and other elevated surfaces to capture microscopic food carried downstream. These habitats are typically warm, clean, highly oxygenated, and rich in suspended organic material.

Adult Bamboo Shrimp typically reach about 2.5 to 4 inches in length, making them considerably larger and more substantial than common dwarf shrimp such as Neocaridina and Caridina varieties. The body is robust and usually displays warm shades of reddish brown, rust, tan, orange-brown, or earthy brown, often with a lighter cream or yellowish stripe running along the back. Coloration can change considerably depending on the individual, surroundings, diet, and molt cycle. Their most distinctive feature is the pair of specialized fan-like feeding appendages at the front of the body. When feeding, the shrimp spreads these delicate fans directly into the current, periodically folding them toward the mouth to consume the captured particles. This unusual behavior makes Bamboo Shrimp fascinating to watch even in a busy community aquarium.

A mature aquarium of at least 20 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks providing greater stability and more opportunities for natural feeding behavior. Water flow is particularly important. The aquarium should include moderate to strong current along with rocks, driftwood, branches, or other elevated perches positioned directly in the flow. Once comfortable, Bamboo Shrimp often select a favorite perch and spend hours sitting in the current with their feeding fans fully extended. Caves, wood, and shaded retreats should also be provided for use during molting.

Water conditions should remain stable, clean, and well oxygenated. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.5 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Bamboo Shrimp are sensitive to deteriorating water quality and sudden parameter changes, particularly around molting. Copper-based medications should be avoided, as copper can be toxic to shrimp and other aquatic invertebrates.

Feeding Bamboo Shrimp differs considerably from feeding typical dwarf shrimp. They are specialized suspension feeders that capture microscopic algae, microorganisms, fine detritus, and other tiny organic particles directly from the water column. A mature aquarium with abundant natural microorganisms provides an important foundation, but supplemental feeding is often necessary. Finely powdered shrimp foods, crushed flakes, powdered spirulina, fry foods, and other very fine foods can be released upstream so the current carries them through the shrimp's feeding fans. If a Bamboo Shrimp is repeatedly scraping the substrate with its fans instead of filtering from the current, it can be a sign that insufficient suspended food is available.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Bamboo Shrimp have no claws designed for catching fish and pose essentially no threat to healthy tankmates. They coexist well with peaceful tetras, rasboras, danios, Corydoras, Otocinclus, small gouramis, peaceful loaches, dwarf shrimp, and snails. Large or predatory fish should be avoided, particularly because Bamboo Shrimp are extremely vulnerable immediately after molting.

Breeding is extremely difficult in captivity because Bamboo Shrimp have an amphidromous life cycle. Females can carry large numbers of eggs in freshwater, but the newly hatched larvae require brackish to marine conditions for development before eventually transitioning back into freshwater. As a result, establishing a self-sustaining population in a normal freshwater aquarium is highly unlikely.

Atyopsis moluccensis is one of the most fascinating freshwater shrimp available, offering behavior completely different from conventional algae-grazing dwarf shrimp. Its impressive size, peaceful temperament, constantly waving feeding fans, and habit of positioning itself dramatically in flowing water make the Bamboo Shrimp an outstanding addition to mature community aquariums with good current and plenty of suspended microscopic food.
