The Banded Darter Characin, scientifically known as Characidium fasciatum, is a small, bottom-dwelling characin hailing from the São Francisco and upper Paraná River drainages in Brazil. It is named for its habit of perching on the substrate, darting among rocks rather than swimming in open water.

Adult Banded Darter Characins reach up to about 2.7 inches (6.9 cm) in length. They are slender with a slightly flattened body and display subtle barring or mottling, usually olive to pale brown, allowing them to blend effortlessly with the riverbed.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is ideal for a small group. These fish thrive in well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong current, replicating their riverine habitat. Use smooth stones, driftwood, and open bottom areas for their natural behavior to shine through.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 64–75 °F (18–24 °C), a pH of 5.6–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Stability and cleanliness are key to keeping them healthy and active.

Feeding is straightforward. They are micropredators and easily accept small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms, along with finely crushed flakes or pellets.

Banded Darter Characins are peaceful and are best kept in small groups. They pair well with other gentle, bottom-dwelling South American species that appreciate similar flow and water quality but avoid slow-moving or aggressive tankmates.

Breeding in captivity is not commonly documented but may be possible in river-style setups with shaded, rocky areas. If spawning occurs, eggs are typically scattered on hard surfaces and offer no parental care—fry will need infusoria or baby brine shrimp.

Characidium fasciatum (Banded Darter Characin) brings subtle beauty and unique behavior to river-style aquariums when kept in appropriate conditions.
