Batik Nerite Snail

The Batik Nerite Snail, scientifically known as Neritina pulligera “Batik,” is a striking freshwater snail admired for its unique shell pattern composed of dark spirals and bands resembling batik fabric. It originates from inland rivers and streams across Southeast Asia, where it inhabits hard-surface habitats in flowing water.

Adult Batik Nerite Snails typically grow to about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Their shells showcase high contrast patterns of black or dark brown lines and spots against a golden to olive background, often capped with a darker whorl. The body is dark gray, and the snail uses a strong foot and operculum to cling to surfaces even in strong currents.

A tank of at least 5 gallons is adequate for one or two individuals, as long as the habitat meets their needs. Provide ample hard surfaces such as rocks, wood, driftwood, and glass for algae growth, and maintain moderate to strong water flow to replicate their natural habitat. Secure tank lids are recommended because nerites are known to climb out.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 72 to 79°F (22 to 26°C), a pH between 7.0 and 8.5, and moderate to high hardness to support shell health. Stable, well-oxygenated water with strong filtration is important for long-term success.

Feeding Neritina pulligera “Batik” is simple: they graze on algae and biofilm naturally, but in tanks where algae are scarce, they should be supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini and spinach. They do well in community setups, but ensure adequate food is available to prevent them nibbling on delicate plants.

Batik Nerite Snails are peaceful and compatible with virtually all community fish, shrimp, and snails. They are safe in planted tanks and but will not reproduce in freshwater, so they will not overpopulate.
