Betta Botanicals – Cacao Leaves (Colombia)

Cacao Leaves from Colombia are natural aquarium botanicals that add texture, leaf litter, and biological complexity to freshwater aquariums. Their broad, natural shape makes them particularly well suited for creating submerged leaf beds inspired by the forest streams and waterways of South America.

These leaves release relatively low amounts of tannins, making them an excellent choice for aquarists who want the benefits and appearance of botanical leaf litter without heavily tinting their aquarium water. As the leaves become waterlogged and gradually break down, their surfaces provide opportunities for biofilm and microbial communities to develop.

Cacao Leaves are particularly useful in South American biotope-inspired aquariums, shrimp tanks, and naturalistic setups housing dwarf cichlids, tetras, catfish, and other freshwater species. They can be used individually or combined with seed pods, twigs, and other botanicals to create a more diverse substrate environment.
