Betta unimaculata, commonly known as the Howong Betta or One-Spot Betta, is a large wild Betta native to eastern Borneo, Indonesia. It inhabits forest streams, shallow pools, and flowing tributaries in Kalimantan, where it is commonly associated with clear to lightly stained water, submerged roots, leaf litter, rocks, and dense overhanging vegetation. Unlike many of the tiny peat-swamp Bettas, Betta unimaculata is a substantially larger, more powerful fish adapted to somewhat more open and flowing habitats.
Adult Betta unimaculata typically reaches about 4.5 to 5 inches in length, making it one of the larger wild Betta species commonly maintained in aquariums. The body is elongated, muscular, and considerably more streamlined than the familiar domesticated Betta splendens. Mature males are especially impressive, developing rich bronze, copper, green, and blue iridescence across the scales. The head and gill plates can glow with metallic turquoise to emerald coloration, while the fins develop beautiful blue-green iridescence accented by warm reddish, orange, or brown tones. Males also develop longer, more pointed finnage and a much more intense metallic sheen than females. The overall effect is distinctly wild and predatory, with coloration that changes dramatically depending on lighting, mood, and viewing angle.
A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a pair, with larger aquariums strongly preferred for groups or community setups. The aquarium should provide substantial structure using driftwood, branches, rocks, dense planting, and floating vegetation while maintaining some open swimming space. Visual barriers are particularly important when keeping multiple individuals. A tightly fitted lid is absolutely essential, as Betta unimaculata is an exceptionally capable jumper.
Water conditions should remain warm, clean, and stable. Temperatures between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 5.5 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Unlike some highly specialized blackwater Betta species, Betta unimaculata is relatively adaptable when maintained in stable conditions. Gentle to moderate water movement and good oxygenation are beneficial.
Betta unimaculata is primarily carnivorous and naturally feeds on insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, worms, and other small aquatic animals. In the aquarium it readily accepts quality carnivore pellets along with frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and other appropriately sized meaty foods. A varied diet helps develop the intense metallic coloration and robust body condition seen in mature specimens.
Temperament is confident and territorial but generally manageable with appropriate space. Males may display aggressively toward one another, and pairs can also become confrontational if adequate cover is not provided. Their relatively large size means very small fish and shrimp may be viewed as prey. When kept in a community aquarium, tankmates should be peaceful but confident species large enough not to be swallowed or intimidated.
Unlike the bubble-nesting Betta species familiar to most aquarists, Betta unimaculata is a paternal mouthbrooder. After an elaborate courtship and spawning embrace, the male collects the fertilized eggs into his mouth and carries them throughout their development. After approximately two weeks, he releases relatively large, fully formed fry capable of immediately feeding on small live foods. This fascinating reproductive strategy is one of the major attractions of keeping the species.
Betta unimaculata is a spectacular wild Betta that offers a completely different experience from domesticated Betta splendens. Its impressive size, metallic turquoise and bronze coloration, streamlined predatory appearance, paternal mouthbrooding behavior, and bold personality make the One-Spot Betta an exceptional centerpiece for aquarists interested in larger and less commonly kept wild Betta species.
