Black Ruby Barb-Lg

Black Ruby Barb, Pethia nigrofasciata, is a beautifully colored cyprinid native to Sri Lanka, where it is naturally found in forested streams of the island’s southwestern wet zone. It inhabits clear, shaded waterways with gentle to moderate current, sandy or gravel substrates, leaf litter, submerged wood, and dense riparian vegetation. These streams are typically cool to moderately warm, well oxygenated, and relatively soft, making the species particularly well suited to planted aquariums with clean, flowing water.

Adult Black Ruby Barbs typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. Juveniles and females display a warm golden-yellow to silvery body crossed by several broad vertical black bands, giving them an attractive barred appearance even before males develop their mature coloration. Adult males become spectacular, particularly when displaying or in breeding condition. Much of the body darkens to deep charcoal or velvety black while the head, chest, and forward portion of the body develop intense ruby-red to crimson coloration. The dark vertical bands become partially obscured against the blackened body, while the fins can take on rich red, orange, and black tones. A group containing mature displaying males can produce an impressive combination of glowing ruby red and nearly black coloration.

A tank of at least 20 to 30 gallons is recommended for a proper school, with longer aquariums preferred because these are active swimming fish. Black Ruby Barbs should be maintained in groups of at least six, although eight to twelve or more encourages more natural social behavior and creates a much stronger display. The aquarium should include plenty of open swimming space along with dense plants, driftwood, rocks, and shaded areas around the perimeter. A darker substrate and lush green plants provide an especially attractive backdrop for mature males.

Water conditions should remain clean, stable, and well oxygenated. Temperatures between 68 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Black Ruby Barbs appreciate regular water changes and good circulation but do not require excessively strong current. They are relatively hardy once established and adapt well to typical community aquarium conditions.

Black Ruby Barbs are omnivorous. In nature they consume algae, plant material, detritus, insects, crustaceans, and other small aquatic organisms. In the aquarium they readily accept quality flakes and small pellets along with frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and similar foods. Vegetable-based foods and spirulina should also be included regularly. A varied diet is particularly important for developing the intense black and ruby-red coloration of mature males.

Temperament is peaceful and social. Although they are active barbs, Black Ruby Barbs are generally much less prone to persistent fin nipping than some of their more boisterous relatives, particularly when maintained in an appropriately sized school. They coexist well with rasboras, danios, peaceful loaches, Corydoras, gouramis, rainbowfish, and other similarly sized community species. Males frequently display toward one another, intensifying their colors and spreading their fins, but these interactions are generally harmless.

Breeding is possible in captivity. Black Ruby Barbs are egg scatterers that deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants, mosses, or spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and may consume both eggs and newly hatched fry, so breeders typically separate the adults after spawning. Conditioning adults with a varied diet and providing clean, slightly softer water can encourage spawning.

Pethia nigrofasciata is one of the most dramatically colored barb species available in the aquarium hobby. The transformation of mature males from golden, vertically barred juveniles into intensely ruby-red and velvety black adults is spectacular, while their peaceful temperament and manageable size make them considerably easier to incorporate into community aquariums than many aquarists expect from a barb.
