Blue Iris, Iris versicolor, is a hardy marginal plant native to North America. It grows naturally along marshes, wet meadows, riverbanks, and the edges of slow-moving waterways where soil remains saturated or shallowly flooded. These environments are typically rich in organic matter, with full sun to partial shade and consistent moisture throughout the growing season.

Iris versicolor produces upright, sword-like leaves that are bright to medium green and form dense, spreading clumps. Mature plants typically reach 2 to 3 feet in height. In late spring to early summer, they produce striking blue to violet flowers with intricate veining and yellow accents near the base of the petals. The blooms rise above the foliage on sturdy stems and are the plant’s main ornamental feature.

Blue Iris is best grown as a marginal plant with its roots in saturated soil or shallow water and the crown positioned at or slightly above the waterline. It thrives in full sun, which promotes the strongest growth and most abundant flowering, though it will tolerate partial shade. Over time, it spreads by rhizomes and can form large, dense stands if left undisturbed.

Water and soil conditions are flexible as long as moisture is consistent. Iris versicolor tolerates a wide pH range from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline and grows well in soft to moderately hard water. It is fully cold-hardy and survives winter by going dormant, returning each spring with new growth.
