Blue Hygrophila, Hygrophila salicifolia, is a Southeast Asian aquatic stem plant native to India, Bangladesh, and surrounding regions. It grows in rivers, floodplains, canals, and seasonal wetlands where water levels fluctuate and the plant alternates between submerged and emersed growth. These environments are typically warm, nutrient-rich, and exposed to moderate to high light.

In the aquarium, Hygrophila salicifolia develops long, narrow, willow-like leaves that can grow quite large compared to most stem plants. The leaves are bright green to olive, but under strong lighting and proper nutrient balance they can show a distinct bluish or metallic sheen, which gives rise to the common name. Stems are upright and vigorous, and the plant can easily reach 16 to 24 inches in height, making it a true background species.

This plant is best suited to medium and large aquariums due to its size and growth rate. It is typically planted in groups in the background to create height and structure. Moderate to high lighting promotes stronger coloration and more compact growth, while lower light results in taller, more spaced-out stems. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions are flexible and forgiving. Hygrophila salicifolia grows well in temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Stability is more important than exact parameters. CO₂ supplementation is not required but significantly improves growth density and overall appearance.

This species feeds from both the substrate and water column. Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs support strong lower growth, while regular liquid fertilization promotes consistent development. It is a fast grower and will require regular trimming to prevent shading other plants. Cuttings can be replanted easily, making propagation simple.

Hygrophila salicifolia is compatible with most community fish and invertebrates. Its leaves are more delicate than some Hygrophila species and may be nipped by herbivorous fish, but in most community setups it performs well. Dense growth provides cover and vertical structure in planted aquariums.

Blue Hygrophila, Hygrophila salicifolia, is a tall, fast-growing stem plant valued for its narrow leaves and subtle bluish sheen. With adequate light and nutrients, it creates strong vertical impact and a natural flowing look in larger planted aquariums.
