Bujurquina syspilus is a medium-sized South American cichlid native to the upper Amazon and western Amazon tributary systems of Peru and Ecuador. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, floodplain lagoons, and forest margins with sandy or silty substrates and scattered submerged wood. These habitats are typically warm, soft to moderately soft, and slightly acidic to neutral, with gentle current and open areas suitable for foraging and pair bonding.

Adult Bujurquina syspilus typically reaches about 6 to 8 inches in length. The body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, with a smooth forehead and subtle profile compared to more aggressive cichlids. Base coloration ranges from silver to beige with iridescent blue or green speckling across the face and upper body. Many individuals show a dark mid-lateral spot and faint vertical shading along the flanks. During breeding or display, coloration intensifies and the body may take on warmer tones.

A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended for a pair, with larger tanks preferred for groups. Bujurquina syspilus is relatively peaceful for a cichlid of its size and does best in spacious aquariums with open sand areas for natural behavior. Fine sand substrate is strongly recommended, as this species sifts substrate while feeding. Driftwood, rocks, and visual barriers help reduce stress and define territories without encouraging excessive aggression.

Water conditions should be stable and clean. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water. Like many Amazonian cichlids, this species thrives in stable conditions with strong filtration and regular water changes. Good oxygenation supports activity and overall health.

Feeding Bujurquina syspilus is straightforward. In nature it feeds on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and organic material sifted from substrate. In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and mysis shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. A varied diet promotes strong growth and breeding readiness.

Temperament is generally peaceful and social compared to many larger cichlids. Bujurquina syspilus can be kept with other non-aggressive medium-sized fish that tolerate similar water conditions. It should not be housed with highly aggressive species or very small fish that may be stressed by its size.

Breeding is achievable in captivity. This species is a biparental substrate spawner, laying eggs on flat rocks or cleaned surfaces. Both parents guard the eggs and fry, and parental care is attentive. Stable water conditions and minimal disturbance improve breeding success.

Bujurquina syspilus is an attractive, relatively mild-mannered Amazonian cichlid that offers natural coloration, interesting behavior, and manageable temperament in a larger aquarium. With adequate space, sand substrate, and compatible tankmates, it becomes a rewarding centerpiece species for South American community setups.
