Cabomba aquatica is a finely textured aquatic stem plant native to tropical South America, particularly the Amazon Basin. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, flooded forest margins, backwaters, and shallow lakes where water is warm, soft to moderately soft, and often slightly stained. In the wild it grows fully submerged, forming loose stands in calm or gently flowing areas with good light penetration.

In the aquarium, Cabomba aquatica is recognized for its delicate, fan-shaped leaves that are arranged in whorls around a slender stem. The foliage is bright green to light lime in coloration and has a soft, feathery appearance that creates strong visual contrast against broader-leaved plants. Under high light and stable conditions, it forms dense, bushy growth, while insufficient light results in thinner stems and leaf drop along the lower portions.

Cabomba aquatica is best suited for medium to large aquariums due to its height and light requirements. It is typically planted in groups in the background, where its fine texture can provide depth and movement. Moderate to high lighting is strongly recommended to maintain compact growth and prevent deterioration of lower leaves. Gentle to moderate water movement is preferred, as strong current can damage the fragile foliage.

Water conditions should remain stable and relatively clean. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water. Cabomba aquatica can be sensitive to sudden parameter changes and does not tolerate poor water quality well. Consistent maintenance and regular water changes are important for long-term success.

This species feeds primarily from the water column and benefits from consistent liquid fertilization. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace elements should be maintained at balanced levels to support healthy growth. CO₂ supplementation is not strictly required but significantly improves density, coloration, and overall vigor. Without adequate nutrients or light, the plant may shed lower leaves and appear sparse.

Cabomba aquatica is compatible with most peaceful community fish, though its delicate leaves may be damaged by large herbivorous species or boisterous fish. Its fine foliage provides excellent shelter for fry and small invertebrates and adds a soft, flowing aesthetic to planted aquariums.

Cabomba aquatica is a visually striking, light-demanding stem plant valued for its feathery texture and vibrant green coloration. When provided with strong lighting, stable nutrients, and clean water, it creates lush, natural movement and depth in well-maintained planted aquariums.
