The Cardinal Plant, scientifically known as Lobelia cardinalis, is a striking aquatic and semi-aquatic plant native to North America. In nature, it often grows along the edges of streams, ponds, and wetlands, where its vibrant red flowers attract pollinators. In the aquarium hobby, it is appreciated for its vivid green to reddish leaves and its versatility in both submerged and emersed growth.

When grown submerged in an aquarium, Cardinal Plant develops elongated stems with ovate green leaves that sometimes take on bronze or reddish hues under strong lighting. Emersed growth produces broader leaves and, given the right conditions, the plant will send up tall spikes bearing brilliant scarlet flowers above the waterline. This makes it a popular choice for paludariums and open-top aquariums.

A nutrient-rich substrate is recommended for best growth, as Lobelia cardinalis is a heavy root feeder. Water parameters should include a temperature range of 68 to 82°F (20 to 28°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Moderate to high lighting encourages compact, colorful growth, and supplemental CO₂ and fertilizers will enhance color and vigor.

Cardinal Plant can be propagated by cutting healthy stems and replanting them in the substrate, or by separating side shoots from the base. In aquascaping, it is often used as a midground to background plant due to its moderate height and bold color contrast.

Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Plant) adds a splash of vivid color and textural interest to aquariums, terrariums, and paludariums, making it a versatile choice for aquarists and aquascapers seeking both beauty and adaptability.
