Joka Cichlid, Coelotilapia joka, is a distinctive West African cichlid native to coastal river systems of Sierra Leone and Liberia. It inhabits clear to lightly stained forest streams and rivers with rocky areas, submerged wood, sandy substrates, and abundant cover along the banks. These tropical waterways are typically warm, soft to moderately hard, and well oxygenated. Its relatively restricted distribution and uncommon appearance in the aquarium trade make Coelotilapia joka an especially interesting species for aquarists interested in West African cichlids.
Adult Joka Cichlids typically reach about 4 to 5 inches in length. The body is elongated and moderately deep with a rounded head and substantial lips. Their coloration is particularly attractive, with a pale cream, yellowish, or golden base crossed by several broad, dark brown to nearly black vertical bands. The contrasting bands extend through much of the body and create a bold, almost zebra-like appearance. Depending on mood and condition, the lighter areas can become noticeably warmer and more golden, while the dark bars intensify dramatically. Mature males generally become larger and more robust, while females remain somewhat smaller and can develop especially strong coloration during breeding.
A tank of at least 40 gallons is recommended for a compatible pair, with larger aquariums preferred for community setups or multiple individuals. The aquarium should provide plenty of structure using driftwood, rocks, caves, and dense planting while still leaving open areas for swimming and foraging. Sand or fine gravel works well as substrate. Visual barriers are especially important because these fish establish territories and appreciate secure retreats.
Water conditions should remain clean, stable, and well oxygenated. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and good biological filtration are important, particularly when maintaining breeding adults. Gentle to moderate water movement works well and helps replicate their naturally flowing stream habitats.
Coelotilapia joka is an omnivore that naturally feeds on algae, aufwuchs, small invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, and other organic material collected from rocks and submerged surfaces. In the aquarium it readily accepts high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based foods, frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized foods. Including vegetable and algae-based foods alongside meaty offerings provides a balanced diet and helps maintain excellent condition.
Temperament is generally moderate but territorial, particularly between adults and during breeding. Joka Cichlids can be maintained with appropriately sized, peaceful to moderately assertive West African and community species, but adequate space and visual barriers are important. Established pairs may vigorously defend their territory, so timid or very small tankmates should be avoided in confined aquariums.
Breeding is possible in captivity and is one of the most interesting aspects of keeping the species. Coelotilapia joka forms pairs and uses protected areas among rocks, caves, and other structures for reproduction. Both parents participate in caring for and defending their offspring, becoming significantly more territorial once fry are present. Providing several potential spawning sites allows a pair to select a secure territory while reducing stress.
Coelotilapia joka is an uncommon and beautifully patterned West African cichlid whose bold dark barring and warm cream-to-golden coloration immediately set it apart from more familiar aquarium cichlids. Its manageable adult size, fascinating pair behavior, and restricted West African distribution make the Joka Cichlid an excellent centerpiece for aquarists seeking something genuinely different.
