Compoma #48 Endler's Livebearer, Poecilia wingei, is a selectively maintained locality strain originating from the Laguna de los Patos region of northeastern Venezuela. Like all Endler's Livebearers, it comes from warm, mineral-rich coastal waters and associated drainage systems where dense aquatic vegetation, algae growth, and shallow habitats provide abundant food and shelter. The Compoma #48 strain is prized for preserving distinctive wild-type coloration and patterning that differs from commercially hybridized Endler varieties.

Adult males typically reach about 0.75 to 1 inch in length, while females grow larger at approximately 1.5 to 2 inches. Males display an extraordinary combination of metallic green, yellow, orange, black, and blue markings that vary between individuals but remain characteristic of the strain. The Compoma #48 line is particularly valued by Endler enthusiasts for its intense coloration and genetically distinct patterning. Females are larger and silver-gray in coloration, allowing the males' brilliant colors to stand out dramatically.

A tank of at least 10 gallons is suitable for a colony, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and allow more natural social behavior. Dense planting is recommended, as it provides security for adults and refuge for fry. Floating plants, fine-leaved stems, and mosses help create a natural environment while increasing juvenile survival. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions are flexible and forgiving. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 7.0 to 8.2 and soft to moderately hard water. Endler's Livebearers generally prefer mineral-rich water and tend to display their best coloration and reproductive success under stable conditions.

Feeding is simple. In nature they consume algae, biofilm, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and organic material. In the aquarium they readily accept flakes, micro-pellets, frozen foods such as daphnia and baby brine shrimp, and vegetable-based foods. A varied diet enhances coloration and supports healthy reproduction.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Compoma #48 Endler's Livebearers do well with other small, non-aggressive community fish and are especially effective in planted aquariums. Their constant activity and bright coloration make them excellent display fish despite their small size.

Breeding occurs readily in captivity. Like other livebearers, females give birth to fully formed free-swimming fry approximately every four weeks under favorable conditions. Fry grow quickly and readily accept finely crushed foods and baby brine shrimp.

Poecilia wingei "Compoma #48" is a beautiful and highly sought-after Endler strain that combines the vivid coloration of wild Endlers with the hardiness and ease of care that have made the species so popular. Its brilliant colors, constant activity, and prolific nature make it an outstanding choice for planted nano aquariums and livebearer enthusiasts alike.
