Cryptocoryne Balansae

Mature plants reach 16 to 24 inches (40 to 60 cm) in height. The long, lanceolate leaves are bright green to bronze-brown with a distinct ruffled texture and can develop reddish tones under strong light. The plant grows from a thick rhizome and spreads slowly by runners once established.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended, with open vertical space for the leaves to extend. Use a soft, nutrient-rich substrate such as fine sand or planted-tank soil. Cryptocoryne balansae prefers gentle water flow, and it adapts well to both submerged and emersed growth. Provide moderate to strong lighting; stronger light enhances leaf color and texture.

Water parameters should include a temperature of 72 to 82 °F (22 to 28 °C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. This plant benefits from CO₂ supplementation but will thrive without it in nutrient-rich conditions.

Feeding is simple—regular doses of liquid fertilizer or root tabs support healthy growth. Once established, it is slow to moderate in growth speed and requires little maintenance beyond occasional pruning of older leaves.

Cryptocoryne balansae is peaceful and suitable for nearly all freshwater aquariums, including those with fish, shrimp, and snails. Like other Cryptocorynes, it may undergo “crypt melt” (loss of leaves) after planting or major water changes, but it will regrow from the rootstock once acclimated.
