Crystal Red Shrimp, Caridina cf. cantonensis, is a selectively bred freshwater dwarf shrimp that originated from Bee Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis) native to southern China. While its wild ancestors inhabit cool, clear mountain streams with rocky bottoms, leaf litter, and abundant biofilm, the Crystal Red Shrimp itself does not occur naturally in the wild. It was first developed in Japan through selective breeding, resulting in the iconic red and white color pattern that has become one of the most sought-after ornamental shrimp varieties in the aquarium hobby.
Adult Crystal Red Shrimp typically reach about 1 to 1.25 inches in length. They possess a slender, translucent body overlaid with brilliant white and deep crimson-red bands of varying width and intensity. Higher-grade specimens exhibit solid, opaque white coloration paired with vibrant, evenly distributed red markings that create striking contrast. Their graceful legs and antennae are often lightly colored to match the body pattern, and healthy individuals display a clean, glossy appearance that stands out beautifully against dark substrates and lush green plants. Numerous grading systems exist, ranging from lower-grade banded shrimp to highly prized patterns such as Hinomaru, No Entry, Mosura, and other advanced exhibition-quality forms.
A mature aquarium of at least 10 gallons is recommended, although larger aquariums provide greater water stability and are considerably easier to maintain. Crystal Red Shrimp thrive in densely planted aquariums with abundant mosses, fine-leaved plants, driftwood, botanicals, and porous rock that encourage biofilm growth. Sponge filters or other shrimp-safe filtration are strongly recommended, and plenty of hiding places should be provided for newly molted shrimp and juveniles.
Water quality is the single most important factor in successfully keeping Crystal Red Shrimp. Temperatures between 68 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with cooler water generally promoting longevity and successful breeding. They prefer a pH of approximately 5.8 to 6.8, very low carbonate hardness, and soft water with a general hardness of roughly 4 to 6 dGH. Many successful keepers utilize remineralized reverse osmosis water and active buffering substrates to maintain the stable water chemistry these shrimp require. Sudden fluctuations in water parameters should always be avoided.
Crystal Red Shrimp are constant grazers that feed primarily on biofilm, algae, microorganisms, and decaying plant material. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality shrimp foods, algae wafers, powdered fry foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich foods offered in moderation. A mature aquarium with abundant natural biofilm is invaluable, as it provides a continuous food source between supplemental feedings.
Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Crystal Red Shrimp are best maintained in species-only aquariums or with very gentle tankmates such as small snails and other peaceful dwarf shrimp requiring identical water parameters. Most community fish, including many small tetras and rasboras, will prey on shrimplets and may stress adult shrimp. A dedicated shrimp aquarium is the best option for establishing a thriving breeding colony.
Breeding is readily achievable under stable conditions. Females carry fertilized eggs beneath their abdomen for approximately three to four weeks before releasing fully formed miniature shrimp. Unlike Amano Shrimp, Crystal Red Shrimp do not require a larval stage in brackish water, allowing young shrimp to develop entirely in freshwater. Stable water quality, abundant biofilm, and minimal disturbances are key to raising large numbers of healthy juveniles.
With its stunning red and white coloration, peaceful nature, and fascinating colony behavior, Caridina cf. cantonensis remains one of the most iconic freshwater shrimp in the aquarium hobby. Whether showcased in a dedicated shrimp aquarium or a carefully planned planted aquascape, the Crystal Red Shrimp rewards attentive care with vibrant color, continuous activity, and the opportunity to establish a beautiful, self-sustaining colony.
