The Crystalline Rosy Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon epicharis, is a delicate characin native to slow-moving blackwater streams and flooded forests of Brazil and Venezuela. It is an uncommon species in the aquarium hobby, valued for its subtle beauty and peaceful temperament.

Adult Crystalline Rosy Tetras typically reach about 1.5 inches (4 cm) in length. Their bodies are mostly translucent with a soft rosy hue, and they display a small dark shoulder spot. The dorsal fin often has a black-and-white pattern, while the caudal fin shows reddish-orange highlights. Under subdued lighting in a well-kept blackwater aquarium, their delicate colors become most noticeable.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a group. Though not a tight schooling fish, they are social and should be kept in groups of six or more. A dark substrate, dense planting, and floating vegetation help mimic their natural habitat and bring out their colors.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 74 to 80°F (23 to 27°C), a pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and soft to moderately soft water. They thrive in clean, stable blackwater conditions with gentle filtration.

Feeding is simple, as they are omnivorous and will accept high-quality micro pellets or flakes, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, or bloodworms.

Breeding Crystalline Rosy Tetras is possible in captivity. They are egg scatterers, depositing eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation. Fry are very small and should be started on infusoria or similarly fine live foods.

Hyphessobrycon epicharis (Crystalline Rosy Tetra) is a subtle, elegant species that adds gentle motion and refinement to softwater community and blackwater aquariums.
