Desert Goby

Desert Goby, Chlamydogobius eremius, is a hardy and charismatic goby species native to the arid interior of Australia, where it occurs in isolated desert springs, artesian wells, billabongs, and temporary waterholes across parts of South Australia, the Northern Territory, and western Queensland. These habitats are extreme by aquarium standards, often experiencing wide swings in temperature, salinity, and water chemistry, and may partially dry during drought. As a result, the Desert Goby is exceptionally adaptable and tolerant compared to most freshwater fish.

Adult Desert Gobies typically reach around 2.5 to 3 inches in length and have a compact but sturdy body with a large head and expressive eyes. Base coloration is usually sandy tan to light brown, overlaid with darker vertical bars and mottling that provides excellent camouflage against rock and sediment. Males develop striking coloration when settled and displaying, showing iridescent blue to turquoise spotting on the body and fins, along with darker, more defined barring and extended dorsal fins. During breeding condition, males become especially vivid and eye-catching, making this species far more colorful than its desert origins might suggest.

A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is suitable for a small group, with additional space recommended if keeping multiple males. The aquarium should be structured with rocks, driftwood, caves, and crevices, as Desert Gobies are territorial and rely on cover to establish boundaries and reduce aggression. Sand or fine gravel works well as a substrate. Plants are optional and should be hardy species that tolerate warm water and moderate mineral content. Moderate flow is ideal, avoiding both stagnant conditions and strong current.

Water conditions are one of the Desert Goby’s strongest attributes. Temperatures between 68 and 82°F are tolerated, with a pH range of roughly 7.0 to 8.5 and moderate to high hardness. This species is unusually tolerant of mineral-rich water and even mild salinity, reflecting its natural desert environments. While stability is always beneficial, Desert Gobies are far more forgiving than most small freshwater fish.

Feeding Desert Gobies is easy and engaging. In the wild they feed on insects, small crustaceans, and other tiny aquatic animals. In the aquarium they readily accept frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, along with high-quality micro-pellets and small sinking foods. A varied diet enhances coloration and encourages natural behavior, particularly in males.

Temperament is territorial but manageable. Males may spar and display toward one another, especially in smaller tanks or setups with limited cover, but serious damage is uncommon when adequate structure is provided. Females and juveniles are generally peaceful. Desert Gobies are best kept in species-focused aquariums or with other small, robust fish that tolerate similar water conditions. They are not suitable tankmates for very aggressive species or delicate, slow-moving fish.

Breeding Desert Gobies is achievable in captivity and is one of the highlights of keeping the species. Males claim caves or crevices as spawning sites and display intensely to attract females. Eggs are laid inside the shelter and guarded by the male until hatching. Fry are small but can be raised on infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp.
