Eriocaulon sp. ‘Vietnam’ is a compact rosette plant originating from Vietnam and belonging to the pipewort family, Eriocaulaceae. Plants in this group are typically associated with shallow wetlands, stream margins, marshy areas, and seasonally inundated habitats where they grow in nutrient-poor substrates exposed to clean water and strong tropical light. Unlike many Eriocaulon species known for being demanding aquarium plants, the Vietnam form has developed a reputation in the hobby for being considerably more adaptable and easier to maintain.

In the aquarium, Eriocaulon sp. ‘Vietnam’ forms an attractive rosette of long, narrow, bright green leaves that radiate outward from a central growing point. The leaves have a fine, grass-like appearance but are broader and more substantial than true carpeting grasses, giving mature plants a distinctive starburst or fountain-like shape. Plants generally remain around 4 to 8 inches tall, although size varies considerably with lighting and nutrient availability. As the rosette matures, it becomes increasingly dense and symmetrical, making this plant especially attractive as a midground accent or individual focal point.

A nutrient-rich substrate is strongly recommended, as Eriocaulon sp. ‘Vietnam’ develops a substantial root system and obtains a significant portion of its nutrition from the substrate. Root tabs can be particularly useful when it is planted in inert sand or gravel. Moderate to high lighting encourages compact, dense growth and helps maintain the plant’s characteristic rosette form. CO₂ supplementation is highly beneficial and produces faster, fuller growth, although this particular Eriocaulon is considerably more forgiving than many of its relatives and can be maintained without injected CO₂ in a well-balanced aquarium.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with slightly acidic to neutral water generally preferred. Soft to moderately hard water can be tolerated, making Eriocaulon sp. ‘Vietnam’ significantly less restrictive than some of the extremely soft-water Eriocaulon species. Consistent nutrient availability and good circulation around the plant help prevent deterioration of older leaves and encourage healthy new growth from the center of the rosette.

Eriocaulon sp. ‘Vietnam’ benefits from balanced fertilization containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and trace elements. Although it is primarily a strong root feeder, consistent water-column fertilization can further improve growth and overall appearance. Older or damaged outer leaves can simply be removed at the base, while the central growing point should never be cut or buried.

Propagation occurs through the production of side shoots or daughter plants around the base of mature specimens. Once these plantlets have developed their own root systems, they can be carefully separated and replanted elsewhere in the aquarium. Established plants may gradually form attractive clusters if the daughter plants are allowed to remain together.

Eriocaulon sp. ‘Vietnam’ is compatible with virtually all peaceful aquarium fish and invertebrates. Its compact growth works particularly well alongside carpeting plants, Cryptocoryne, Bucephalandra, and colorful stem plants, where its fine bright-green foliage provides excellent textural contrast. Shrimp also frequently graze among the leaves for biofilm and microorganisms.

Eriocaulon sp. ‘Vietnam’ offers the distinctive architectural appearance of an Eriocaulon without the extreme difficulty associated with many members of the genus. Its bright green starburst growth, manageable size, and relatively forgiving care requirements make it an excellent choice for aquarists looking for an unusual midground or focal plant that adds both texture and structure to a planted aquarium.
