The Fire Ant Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon myrmex, is a small, brilliantly colored tetra native to the Rio Formiga in Brazil. It is a recently described species (2017) and is still considered rare in the aquarium hobby, but it has quickly gained popularity due to its fiery appearance and peaceful nature.

Adult Fire Ant Tetras typically reach about 1.2 to 1.5 inches (3 to 4 cm) in length. Males are especially striking, with vivid red-orange bodies, bright orange-red eyes, and fins tinted in matching fiery tones. Females are smaller and more subdued, often showing pale yellowish bodies with a faint dark lateral stripe. Both sexes have the characteristic dark horizontal line running from mid-body to the tail.

A tank of at least 15 gallons is suitable for a group. Fire Ant Tetras are shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of eight or more to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. A densely planted aquarium with open swimming areas and floating vegetation suits them well, and leaf litter or driftwood will help mimic their blackwater habitat.

Water parameters should include a temperature range of 74 to 82°F (23 to 28°C), a pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and soft, acidic water. Clean, stable conditions are important, and regular water changes will help maintain health and coloration.

Feeding Hyphessobrycon myrmex is easy, as they are omnivorous. Offer high-quality micro pellets or flakes as a staple, with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops to enhance color and condition.

Fire Ant Tetras are peaceful and make excellent additions to community tanks with other small, gentle South American fish such as rasboras, pencilfish, Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive species.

Breeding in captivity has not been widely documented, but like other Hyphessobrycon species, they are likely egg scatterers. They would spawn among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no parental care given to the eggs or fry.

Hyphessobrycon myrmex (Fire Ant Tetra) is a dazzling, rare species that brings unique color and energy to blackwater and South American biotope aquariums.
