Amazon Frogbit Portion

The Amazon Frogbit, scientifically known as Limnobium laevigatum, is a popular floating aquatic plant native to slow-moving rivers, ponds, and wetlands of Central and South America. It is prized in the aquarium hobby for its ease of care, attractive appearance, and effectiveness in providing shade, shelter, and nutrient export in both freshwater aquariums and outdoor ponds.

Adult Amazon Frogbit plants produce round to oval, bright green floating leaves that can reach up to 2 inches (5 cm) across. The leaves have a smooth, glossy upper surface and a spongy underside that helps them float. Long, feathery roots dangle beneath each rosette, offering hiding spots for fry and shrimp while also absorbing excess nutrients from the water column.

A tank of any size can accommodate Amazon Frogbit, as it grows quickly and adapts to a wide range of conditions. It thrives best in aquariums with gentle surface movement, moderate to high lighting, and nutrient-rich water. Too much surface agitation can damage the delicate roots and leaves, so avoid placing it directly under strong filter outputs or air stones.

Water parameters for Amazon Frogbit should include a temperature range of 64 to 84°F (18 to 29°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. It grows fastest with good lighting and access to dissolved nutrients, so supplement with liquid fertilizers if growth slows or leaves pale.

Feeding is not required for Amazon Frogbit, as it draws all nutrients directly from the water. However, it does benefit from occasional thinning to prevent excessive coverage, which can block light from reaching submerged plants.

Amazon Frogbit is compatible with most freshwater fish and invertebrates, and its long roots provide excellent cover for fry and shrimp. Be cautious when keeping it with goldfish or other plant-eating species, as they may nibble the leaves and roots.

Propagation is easy, as new plants form along runners and can be separated to start new colonies. Simply remove excess plants to maintain desired coverage.
