Giant Kuhli Loach

Giant Kuhli Loach, Pangio myersi, is a Southeast Asian loach native to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, where it inhabits slow-moving streams, floodplain channels, swamps, and forest creeks with soft substrates and abundant leaf litter. These habitats are typically warm, gently flowing, and heavily shaded, with submerged roots, fallen branches, and dense vegetation providing shelter from predators.

Adult Giant Kuhli Loaches typically reach about 4 to 5 inches in length, making them noticeably larger and heavier-bodied than the more familiar Kuhli Loach, Pangio kuhlii. The body is elongated, eel-like, and cylindrical with a blunt head and tiny barbels surrounding the mouth that are used to search for food. Coloration consists of a rich golden-yellow to tan base crossed by broad, dark chocolate to black bands that wrap completely around the body. Their larger size, bold patterning, and thicker build give them a much more substantial appearance than standard Kuhli Loaches while retaining the same graceful, snake-like movement.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a proper group. Giant Kuhli Loaches are highly social and should be maintained in groups of six or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. A fine sand substrate is essential, as these loaches spend much of their time burrowing beneath the surface or searching through the substrate for food. The aquarium should include driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and dense planting to provide numerous hiding places. Gentle water movement and subdued lighting are preferred.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Like many Southeast Asian loaches, Giant Kuhli Loaches are sensitive to deteriorating water quality and perform best with regular water changes and good filtration.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature they consume insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates found within the substrate. In the aquarium they readily accept sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, Repashy-style gel foods, and other meaty prepared foods. They are primarily nocturnal but become increasingly active during the day once established.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Giant Kuhli Loaches are excellent community fish and coexist well with rasboras, tetras, gouramis, Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and other gentle species. They are completely non-aggressive and spend much of their time exploring the bottom of the aquarium together, often resting in groups beneath wood or among plants.

Breeding Giant Kuhli Loaches in captivity is extremely uncommon and remains poorly documented. Most specimens available in the aquarium trade are wild collected, and little is known about the environmental cues required for successful reproduction.

Pangio myersi is an outstanding choice for aquarists looking for a larger, more robust alternative to the traditional Kuhli Loach. Its bold banding, peaceful personality, and fascinating burrowing behavior make the Giant Kuhli Loach an excellent addition to planted Southeast Asian community aquariums.
