Gold Blue Kerri Tetra, also known as the Leucistic Kerri Tetra, Inpaichthys kerri, is a striking selectively bred color form of the classic Kerri Tetra. The wild species is native to Brazil, where it occurs in the Rio Aripuanã drainage of the Amazon Basin. It inhabits small forest streams and tributaries with submerged roots, leaf litter, and overhanging vegetation. These waters are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, providing the conditions in which this beautiful South American tetra naturally thrives.
Adult Gold Blue Kerri Tetras typically reach about 1.5 to 2 inches in length. What makes this variety special is its leucistic coloration, which dramatically transforms the appearance of the normally darker Kerri Tetra. The body develops a luminous cream to pale golden coloration with beautiful metallic blue, lavender, and turquoise iridescence across the scales. Warm yellow to gold tones can become particularly noticeable along the back and fins, while the translucent quality of the lighter body allows the blue iridescence to glow under aquarium lighting. Depending on the individual, lighting, and maturity, the fish can shift visually between gold, icy blue, violet, and silvery-white. The result is a bright, almost pastel version of Inpaichthys kerri that looks especially impressive against dark substrates and lush green plants.
A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is recommended for a proper school, though larger aquariums provide greater stability and a more impressive display. Gold Blue Kerri Tetras are social fish and should be maintained in groups of at least six, with eight or more being preferable. In larger groups they become more confident, interact more naturally, and create a beautiful shimmering display through the midwater. Plants, driftwood, and shaded areas can be arranged around the perimeter while leaving plenty of open swimming space.
Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 5.5 to 7.2 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Captive-bred Kerri Tetras are relatively adaptable, but regular water changes and consistently good water quality help maintain their strongest coloration and overall condition.
Feeding is straightforward. Inpaichthys kerri naturally feeds on small insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, and other tiny aquatic organisms. In the aquarium, Gold Blue Kerri Tetras readily accept quality flakes, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized foods. A varied diet containing quality frozen or live foods helps intensify their metallic blue and golden coloration.
Temperament is peaceful and community-friendly. Gold Blue Kerri Tetras coexist well with other small, non-aggressive fish including Corydoras, pencilfish, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, peaceful gouramis, and other tetras. Males may display toward one another, but these interactions are generally harmless and can actually bring out stronger coloration.
Breeding is possible in captivity. Like other small characins, they are egg scatterers that deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and may consume the eggs, so breeders typically separate the adults after spawning. Because the Gold Blue coloration is a selectively bred trait, offspring may vary in appearance depending on the genetics of the breeding stock.
The Gold Blue Kerri Tetra is an exceptional variation of an already beautiful South American schooling fish. Its luminous leucistic body combined with shimmering blue, turquoise, violet, and golden highlights gives it a completely different appearance from the standard Inpaichthys kerri. For aquarists looking for an unusual tetra that remains peaceful, manageable, and highly colorful, the Leucistic Kerri Tetra is a standout choice for planted and community aquariums.
