Geophagus sp. “Alto Sinú” is a distinctive South American eartheater cichlid originating from the upper Río Sinú drainage of northwestern Colombia. The Río Sinú is an independent Caribbean-draining river system west of the Andes, geographically isolated from the Amazon and Orinoco basins that are home to many better-known Geophagus species. This locality makes the Alto Sinú Geophagus an especially interesting fish for aquarists interested in uncommon South American cichlids and geographically accurate biotope aquariums.

Adult Geophagus sp. “Alto Sinú” can reach approximately 7 to 9 inches in length, with mature males generally becoming larger and developing more elaborate finnage than females. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed with the sloping forehead and downward-oriented mouth characteristic of eartheaters. Base coloration ranges from silver and pale gold to warm olive, overlaid with beautiful metallic blue-green and turquoise iridescence across the scales. A prominent dark lateral blotch provides strong contrast along the flank, while the face develops brilliant blue-green lines and spotting. Mature fish can show warm orange, red, and yellow coloration through the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, with males developing elongated fin extensions as they mature. Their coloration becomes substantially richer with age and condition, making fully grown specimens considerably more impressive than juveniles.

A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended for a small group of juveniles, with 125 gallons or larger preferred for a mature group. Geophagus are social cichlids and generally display their most natural behavior when maintained in groups rather than singly. Floor space is especially important because these fish spend much of their time foraging along the bottom. Fine sand is essential, as they repeatedly take mouthfuls of substrate, sift edible material through their gills, and discard the cleaned sand. Coarse or sharp gravel prevents this natural behavior and can damage the mouth and gill structures. Driftwood, branches, smooth rocks, and open expanses of sand create an excellent environment.

Water conditions should remain warm, clean, and well oxygenated. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Strong biological filtration and substantial regular water changes are particularly important because Geophagus constantly disturb the substrate while feeding and can produce a considerable bioload as they mature.

Geophagus sp. “Alto Sinú” is an omnivorous benthic feeder. In nature, these fish continuously sift sand for insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, organic material, seeds, and other edible items. In the aquarium they readily accept high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, and other appropriately sized foods. Several smaller feedings are preferable to a single large meal because their natural feeding strategy involves continuously searching the substrate for small food items.

Temperament is generally peaceful for a cichlid of this size. Alto Sinú Geophagus spend much of their time interacting socially and sifting the substrate rather than aggressively defending large territories. Some dominance behavior and chasing should be expected within a group, particularly as fish mature and pairs begin forming. They make excellent companions for appropriately sized tetras, larger characins, peaceful catfish, and other relatively calm South American cichlids. Very aggressive Central American cichlids and other highly territorial species should be avoided.

Breeding behavior follows the highly developed parental strategies characteristic of Geophagus. Compatible adults form pairs and become more territorial as spawning approaches. Eggs are deposited and fertilized on a carefully cleaned surface, after which the parents protect the developing offspring. Depending on the reproductive behavior expressed by this particular population, developing larvae or fry may also be taken into the mouth for protection. Both parents participate extensively in brood defense, and a breeding pair may aggressively exclude other fish from the immediate spawning territory.

Geophagus sp. “Alto Sinú” is an uncommon and impressive Colombian eartheater that combines beautiful metallic coloration with the endlessly fascinating sand-sifting behavior that makes Geophagus so popular. Its isolated origin in the upper Río Sinú drainage, graceful social behavior, increasingly vivid coloration with maturity, and engaging parental care make the Alto Sinú Geophagus an exceptional centerpiece for a large South American aquarium.
