Gold Gourami, Trichopodus trichopterus, is a domesticated color variety of the Three Spot Gourami, a labyrinth fish native to Southeast Asia. The wild form occurs throughout Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and surrounding regions, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers, swamps, floodplains, canals, and heavily vegetated wetlands. These habitats are typically warm, calm, and rich in plant growth, with low to moderate oxygen levels and abundant surface cover.

Adult Gold Gouramis typically reach about 5 to 6 inches in length. The body is deep and laterally compressed with long thread-like pelvic fins used for sensing the environment. The gold variety displays a bright yellow to golden-orange body with marbled darker patterning inherited from the wild-type coloration. Depending on mood and lighting, some individuals may show bronze, peach, or honey-colored tones. Males generally develop more pointed dorsal fins, while females remain slightly rounder-bodied.

A tank of at least 40 to 55 gallons is recommended for a single adult or compatible group. The aquarium should include plants, driftwood, and floating cover to provide security and reduce territorial disputes. Open swimming space should still be maintained. Water movement should be gentle to moderate, as this species naturally inhabits calmer environments and also relies on access to the surface for breathing atmospheric air through its labyrinth organ.

Water conditions are flexible and forgiving. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. Gold Gouramis are hardy fish that adapt well to a range of aquarium conditions provided water quality remains stable and reasonably clean.

Feeding Gold Gouramis is straightforward. In nature they consume insects, larvae, small crustaceans, algae, and organic material. In the aquarium they readily accept flakes, pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. A varied diet supports healthy coloration and overall condition.

Temperament can vary between individuals. Gold Gouramis are generally semi-aggressive, especially mature males, and may become territorial toward one another or toward similarly shaped fish. They are best kept with medium-sized community species that are neither overly timid nor highly aggressive. Long-finned fish may occasionally be harassed.

Breeding is achievable in captivity. Like other gouramis, Gold Gouramis are bubble nest builders. Males construct floating bubble nests among surface plants and guard the eggs and fry after spawning. Warm, calm water and floating vegetation encourage breeding behavior.

Trichopodus trichopterus in its gold form is a hardy and highly recognizable gourami valued for its bright coloration, adaptability, and personality. With adequate space and compatible tankmates, the Gold Gourami becomes an active and eye-catching centerpiece fish for medium to large freshwater aquariums.
