Horsetail Rush, Equisetum hyemale, is a primitive, reed-like plant native to North America, Europe, and Asia. It grows naturally in wetlands, along riverbanks, marshes, and damp soils where moisture is constant. These habitats are typically open to full sun with saturated soil or shallow standing water, and the plant is well adapted to fluctuating water levels and seasonal changes.

Equisetum hyemale is characterized by its upright, hollow, jointed stems that resemble segmented green reeds. The stems are deep green with distinct dark bands at each joint, giving the plant a clean, architectural look. Unlike most plants, it has no true leaves, instead relying on its stems for photosynthesis. Mature stems typically reach 2 to 4 feet in height and grow in dense vertical clusters.

This plant is best grown with its roots in consistently wet soil or shallow water, with the base submerged and the stems above the surface. It can tolerate a range of water depths but performs best when not fully submerged. Full sun promotes the strongest and most upright growth, though it will tolerate partial shade.

Water and soil conditions are highly flexible as long as moisture is constant. Horsetail Rush tolerates a wide pH range from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline and grows well in soft to moderately hard water. It is extremely hardy and can survive cold winters by going dormant, returning with new growth in the spring.

Equisetum hyemale spreads aggressively through underground rhizomes and can quickly form dense stands if not contained. In controlled environments, it is often planted in containers to prevent unwanted spread. It requires little fertilization, and maintenance is typically limited to removing older or damaged stems.

Horsetail Rush is compatible with a wide range of wetland and marginal plantings. Its vertical, structured form makes it especially useful for creating contrast and height in naturalistic designs. It also provides shelter for small wildlife in outdoor settings.
