Hygrophila corymbosa is a fast-growing aquatic stem plant native to Southeast Asia, where it occurs in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and surrounding regions. In nature it inhabits shallow rivers, floodplains, marshes, and irrigation canals, often growing emersed during the dry season and submerged when water levels rise. These habitats are warm, nutrient-rich, and exposed to moderate to high light, allowing the plant to grow vigorously under favorable conditions.

In the aquarium, Hygrophila corymbosa develops upright stems with broad, lance-shaped leaves that range from bright green to deeper olive tones. Under strong lighting and adequate nutrients, the upper leaves may show bronze or pinkish highlights, particularly in newer growth. The plant can reach 12 to 20 inches in height depending on conditions, making it well suited for background placement in medium to large aquariums. Leaves are firm and slightly textured, and growth is typically vertical with moderate branching.

Hygrophila corymbosa is adaptable and forgiving, making it a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. It grows well in sand or gravel and benefits from nutrient-rich substrate or root supplementation. Moderate to high lighting encourages compact growth and stronger coloration, while lower light results in taller stems with wider spacing between leaves. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions are flexible. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are suitable, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. The plant tolerates a wide range of parameters as long as they remain stable. While CO₂ supplementation is not required, it significantly enhances growth rate, leaf size, and overall fullness.

Hygrophila corymbosa feeds heavily from both the substrate and water column. Regular fertilization with macro and micronutrients supports lush growth and prevents deficiencies. Because it grows quickly under good conditions, frequent trimming is often necessary. Cut stems can be replanted to propagate the plant and create dense groupings.

This species is highly compatible with community fish and invertebrates. Its sturdy leaves resist mild grazing, and its dense growth provides cover for fish and fry. It is commonly used in planted aquariums to create a lush green backdrop or as a focal plant in midground layouts.

Hygrophila corymbosa is a reliable, fast-growing stem plant that brings height, fullness, and vibrant green color to freshwater aquariums. Its adaptability, ease of care, and strong growth response make it a dependable choice for a wide range of planted tank setups.
