Kissing Gourami-WIld Type

Kissing Gourami, Helostoma temminckii, is a large labyrinth fish native to Southeast Asia, with a natural distribution that includes Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, floodplains, swamps, lakes, canals, and heavily vegetated wetlands where water is warm and current is generally gentle. Like other labyrinth fishes, Kissing Gouramis possess a specialized labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air, an adaptation that helps them thrive in shallow, oxygen-poor environments.

Adult Kissing Gouramis commonly reach about 8 to 12 inches in aquariums, although exceptionally large specimens can grow even larger. Two primary color forms are commonly encountered in the hobby. The natural or green form displays a silvery green to olive-gray body, while the extremely popular pink form ranges from pale blush pink and peach to nearly creamy white. Both possess a deep, laterally compressed body with large scales, a long dorsal and anal fin, and their unmistakable thick, protruding lips. These specialized lips are lined with fine teeth used to scrape algae and other food from surfaces. The famous “kissing” behavior occurs when two fish lock mouths and push against one another. Despite its affectionate appearance, this is generally a dominance interaction rather than actual affection.

A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended for a single adult, with 100 gallons or larger strongly preferred for multiple specimens or community setups. Kissing Gouramis are active, substantial fish that require considerably more room than their small juvenile size might suggest. The aquarium should provide plenty of open swimming space along with driftwood, rocks, and sturdy plants around the perimeter. Because they naturally graze surfaces, delicate or soft-leaved plants may occasionally be damaged. Gentle to moderate water movement is appropriate, and unobstructed access to the surface must always be available so the fish can breathe atmospheric air.

Water conditions should remain warm, stable, and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 8.0 and soft to moderately hard water. Kissing Gouramis are hardy and adaptable, but their eventual size and substantial appetite create a considerable bioload. Strong biological filtration and regular water changes are important for maintaining healthy adults.

Kissing Gouramis are true omnivores with a particularly strong grazing component to their diet. In nature they consume algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton, aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and plant material while constantly rasping food from submerged surfaces. In the aquarium they readily accept quality pellets and flakes along with spirulina-based foods, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other frozen foods. Providing plenty of vegetable matter is important for maintaining good long-term condition.

Temperament is generally peaceful to semi-aggressive. Kissing Gouramis are not dedicated predators, but their large adult size and assertive personality can make them overwhelming for small or timid community fish. Individuals may establish dominance hierarchies, chase one another, and engage in their characteristic mouth-locking contests. They are best housed with similarly sized, peaceful to moderately assertive fish that will not be intimidated by their activity. Very small tankmates should be avoided with large adults.

Breeding differs considerably from many familiar gouramis. Kissing Gouramis are egg scatterers rather than dedicated bubble-nest builders. During spawning, buoyant eggs are released near the surface, often among floating vegetation. The eggs float upward and may become trapped among plants, but the adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs or fry if given the opportunity. Fry are extremely small and initially require microscopic foods.

Helostoma temminckii is one of the most recognizable gouramis in the aquarium hobby, combining impressive adult size, unusual feeding adaptations, hardy nature, and one of the most famous behaviors found among freshwater fish. Whether kept in the classic pink form or the more natural green form, the Kissing Gourami is an engaging and highly interactive centerpiece whose distinctive puckered lips and fascinating “kissing” displays make it impossible to mistake for anything else.
