L114 Leopard Cactus Pleco, Pseudacanthicus leopardus, is a large South American loricariid catfish native to the Amazon Basin, particularly within Brazilian river systems such as the Rio Branco and associated tributaries. It inhabits warm, well-oxygenated rivers with moderate to strong current, rocky substrates, and submerged wood. These environments often contain crevices and rock piles that provide shelter and territory for bottom-dwelling species.

Adult Pseudacanthicus leopardus typically reaches about 12 to 14 inches in length. The body is thick and muscular with a broad head and powerful fins. Coloration consists of a dark brown to black base covered with bold orange to yellow leopard-like spotting across the body and fins. As the fish matures, the pattern can shift slightly in density and contrast, but the striking spotted appearance remains its defining feature. The species also has prominent odontodes along the body and fins, giving it the rugged texture associated with cactus plecos.

A tank of at least 125 gallons is recommended for a single individual, with larger aquariums preferred as the fish grows. The aquarium should include substantial driftwood, large rocks, and caves to create territories and resting areas. Open areas of substrate allow the fish to move freely along the bottom. Strong filtration and good circulation are important because this species naturally lives in well-oxygenated river environments.

Water conditions should be warm, stable, and clean. Temperatures between 78 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Excellent filtration and regular water changes are necessary due to the size of the fish and its waste production.

Feeding Leopard Cactus Plecos requires a varied, protein-rich diet. In nature they feed on invertebrates, crustaceans, and other small animals found among rocks and wood. In the aquarium they readily accept sinking carnivore pellets, frozen foods such as shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter. While they may graze on surfaces, they should not be relied upon as algae eaters.

Temperament is generally peaceful toward dissimilar fish but territorial toward other large plecos. It is best kept singly unless the aquarium is very large with multiple territories. Suitable tankmates include medium to large peaceful fish that occupy other areas of the aquarium and are not aggressive bottom dwellers.

Breeding Pseudacanthicus leopardus in captivity is rare and not well documented. Like many loricariids, it is believed to spawn in caves where eggs are guarded by the male, but successful reproduction in home aquariums is uncommon.

Pseudacanthicus leopardus is a striking centerpiece pleco known for its bold leopard-like spotting and powerful presence. With adequate space, strong filtration, and proper diet, the Leopard Cactus Pleco becomes a dramatic addition to large Amazon-themed aquariums.
