The Blue Phantom Pleco, scientifically known as Hemiancistrus sp. (L128), is a striking Loricariid catfish native to the fast-flowing, rocky tributaries of the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela. It is highly valued in the aquarium trade for its vibrant blue-green coloration and contrasting white to yellowish spots, making it a standout addition to large, well-structured aquariums.

Adult Blue Phantom Plecos typically reach about 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm) in length. They have a streamlined, armored body with a vivid blue or turquoise hue and numerous small, pale spots covering the body and fins. The intensity of their coloration can vary depending on age, mood, lighting, and water quality, with younger fish often showing brighter colors.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a single Blue Phantom Pleco. The aquarium should feature a soft sand or fine gravel substrate and extensive rockwork, caves, and driftwood to provide hiding places and simulate their native habitat. Strong water movement and high oxygen levels are essential, so use powerful filtration and additional circulation pumps if needed.

Water parameters for the Blue Phantom Pleco should include a temperature range of 77 to 86°F (25 to 30°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and pristine water quality are crucial, as this species is sensitive to poor conditions and organic buildup.

Feeding the Blue Phantom Pleco is straightforward, as they are omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods. Offer a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets or wafers, supplemented with fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and sweet potato. They will also appreciate occasional treats of bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods, but wood is not a dietary requirement for this species.

Blue Phantom Plecos are peaceful and generally do well with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping them with very territorial or aggressive bottom dwellers, as well as with much larger cichlids that might outcompete them for food or space.

Breeding the Blue Phantom Pleco in captivity is rarely achieved and not well documented. They are believed to be cave spawners, with the male guarding eggs laid in secluded crevices, but successful reproduction in the home aquarium is very uncommon.

Hemiancistrus sp. (Blue Phantom Pleco, L128) is a visually stunning and peaceful species that adds color and interest to well-oxygenated, fast-flowing South American aquariums.
