The Green Phantom Pleco, scientifically known as Hemiancistrus sp. (L200), is a visually stunning Loricariid catfish native to the fast-flowing, rocky tributaries of the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela. It is highly valued in the aquarium trade for its vibrant green coloration, white or yellow spots, and peaceful disposition, making it a standout addition to large, well-oxygenated aquariums with ample structure.

Adult Green Phantom Plecos typically reach about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in length. They have a streamlined, armored body with a bright green to olive-green coloration, adorned with numerous small, pale yellow or white spots. The intensity of their coloration can vary depending on age, water conditions, and lighting, with juveniles often displaying brighter hues.

A tank of at least 55 gallons is recommended for a single Green Phantom Pleco. The aquarium should feature a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, extensive rockwork, caves, and driftwood to provide plenty of hiding places and replicate their natural habitat. Strong water movement and high oxygen levels are essential, so use powerful filtration and additional circulation pumps if needed.

Water parameters for the Green Phantom Pleco should include a temperature range of 77 to 86°F (25 to 30°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and pristine water quality are crucial, as this species is sensitive to poor conditions and organic buildup.

Feeding the Green Phantom Pleco is straightforward, as they are omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods. Offer a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets or wafers, supplemented with fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and sweet potato. They will also appreciate occasional treats of bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods, but wood is not a dietary requirement for this species.

Green Phantom Plecos are peaceful and generally do well with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping them with very territorial or aggressive bottom dwellers, as well as with much larger cichlids that might outcompete them for food or space.

Breeding the Green Phantom Pleco in captivity is rarely achieved and not well documented. They are believed to be cave spawners, with the male guarding eggs laid in secluded crevices, but successful reproduction in the home aquarium is very uncommon.

Hemiancistrus sp. (Green Phantom Pleco, L200) is a visually striking, peaceful species that adds color and interest to well-oxygenated, fast-flowing South American aquariums.
