L306 Blood Red Tiger Pleco, Panaqolus claustellifer, is a small South American loricariid catfish native to Peru, where it is associated with the upper Amazon drainage. Like other Panaqolus species, it inhabits warm, tropical river systems with submerged wood, root tangles, rocky crevices, and areas of moderate flow. These habitats provide the wood, biofilm, shelter, and grazing surfaces that are essential to the species’ natural behavior.

Adult L306 Blood Red Tiger Plecos typically reach about 4 to 5 inches in length, making them a manageable dwarf to medium-sized pleco. The body is compact, armored, and built for life among wood and rockwork, with a broad head, strong pectoral fins, and a sucker mouth adapted for rasping surfaces. This species is especially valued for its rich reddish-orange to deep blood-red base coloration overlaid with bold, dark brown to black tiger-like striping across the body and fins. The contrast between the red body color and dark striping gives the fish a dramatic appearance that stands out even in dimly lit, wood-heavy aquariums.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is suitable for a single specimen, though larger aquariums are recommended for groups or community setups. Driftwood is essential and should be included generously, both as shelter and as part of the species’ natural feeding behavior. Caves, wood piles, rock crevices, and shaded retreats should be provided so the fish can establish secure hiding places. Moderate water movement, strong filtration, and good oxygenation are beneficial.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Like many Amazonian plecos, Panaqolus claustellifer does best in mature, well-maintained aquariums with regular water changes and low nitrate levels.

Feeding L306 Blood Red Tiger Plecos requires both driftwood and a varied prepared diet. In nature, Panaqolus species rasp wood, biofilm, algae, and associated organic material from submerged surfaces. In the aquarium they should always have access to driftwood and should also be offered algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, Repashy-style gel foods, quality sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini or squash. Occasional protein-rich foods can be offered sparingly, but the diet should remain heavily plant- and wood-oriented.

Temperament is peaceful and generally community-friendly. L306 Blood Red Tiger Plecos coexist well with tetras, Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, rainbowfish, rasboras, and other peaceful fish. They may become territorial toward other plecos or similar bottom dwellers if hiding places are limited, so multiple caves and wood structures are important when keeping more than one.

Breeding is possible in captivity and follows the typical Panaqolus pattern. Males claim caves or enclosed spaces where spawning occurs, then guard and fan the eggs until they hatch. Warm, clean water, stable conditions, plentiful driftwood, and properly sized caves are important for breeding success.

Panaqolus claustellifer is a stunning dwarf pleco that combines manageable size, peaceful temperament, and intense red-and-black tiger patterning. With abundant driftwood, clean water, and a varied diet, the L306 Blood Red Tiger Pleco becomes an exceptional choice for South American community aquariums and dedicated pleco collections.
