Lake Inle Loach

Lake Inle Loach, Petruichthys brevis, is a small Southeast Asian loach native to Lake Inle and the surrounding watershed in Shan State, Myanmar. It inhabits shallow streams, drainage channels, vegetated margins, and slow-moving areas around the lake where the substrate consists of fine sand, silt, and scattered gravel. These habitats are typically cool to moderately warm, well oxygenated, and densely vegetated, providing abundant cover and feeding opportunities.

Adult Lake Inle Loaches typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. The body is slender and cylindrical with a gently flattened underside adapted for life near the substrate. Coloration ranges from pale tan to light brown with a series of darker blotches and irregular markings along the sides that provide excellent camouflage among sand and leaf litter. The fins are mostly transparent, and the fish has several pairs of delicate barbels around the mouth that are used to locate food within the substrate. Their subtle patterning and constant foraging behavior make them an attractive addition to naturalistic aquariums.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper group. Lake Inle Loaches are social fish and should be maintained in groups of six or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. A fine sand substrate is strongly recommended, as they spend much of their time searching through the bottom for food. The aquarium should include driftwood, rounded stones, plants, and shaded areas while maintaining open sections of substrate for foraging. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 68 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, making this species better suited to slightly cooler aquariums than many tropical loaches. A pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water is preferred. Good oxygenation and regular water changes are important for long-term health.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature Lake Inle Loaches consume insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates collected from the substrate. In the aquarium they readily accept quality sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp, as well as other small prepared foods. Because they are peaceful bottom feeders, care should be taken to ensure they receive food before more aggressive species consume it.

Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Lake Inle Loaches coexist well with rasboras, danios, small barbs, peaceful gouramis, Corydoras, and other gentle community fish. They are non-aggressive toward one another and are most confident when maintained in groups.

Breeding has been reported only rarely in captivity and remains poorly documented. Most specimens available in the aquarium trade are commercially bred or wild collected, and little is known about the environmental cues that trigger spawning.

Petruichthys brevis is a charming and underrated bottom-dwelling loach that combines peaceful behavior, manageable size, and constant activity. Its subtle beauty, social nature, and suitability for planted community aquariums make the Lake Inle Loach an excellent choice for aquarists seeking an uncommon Southeast Asian species.
