Lifalili Jewel Cichlid, Hemichromis lifalili, is a small West African cichlid native to the Congo River Basin, particularly within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, forest streams, floodplain channels, and vegetated shoreline habitats with submerged roots, leaf litter, and scattered rockwork. These environments are typically warm, slightly acidic to neutral, and rich in structure that provides shelter and spawning sites.

Adult Lifalili Jewel Cichlids typically reach about 3 to 4 inches in length, making them considerably smaller and more manageable than many other Hemichromis species. They are widely regarded as one of the most beautiful freshwater cichlids available. The body displays brilliant red coloration over much of the flanks and fins, accented by iridescent blue-green spangling that covers the body and gill plates. During breeding condition, the red coloration intensifies dramatically, creating one of the most vivid displays found among freshwater fish. A distinctive dark lateral spot is usually visible along the body, helping distinguish the species from some closely related jewel cichlids.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is suitable for a pair, with larger aquariums recommended for community setups. The aquarium should include driftwood, rockwork, caves, and visual barriers that allow fish to establish territories. Sand or fine gravel substrate works well, and plants may be incorporated, though some digging behavior should be expected during breeding.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Lifalili Jewel Cichlids are adaptable but display their best coloration and behavior in well-maintained aquariums with regular water changes.

Feeding is straightforward. In nature they consume insects, small crustaceans, worms, and other aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other meaty prepared foods. A varied diet helps maintain vibrant coloration and breeding condition.

Temperament is moderately aggressive, particularly when breeding. Outside of spawning periods they can coexist with appropriately sized, confident tankmates, but pairs become highly territorial when protecting eggs and fry. Care should be taken when selecting community fish, and very small or timid species are generally not recommended.

Breeding is readily achieved in captivity. Lifalili Jewel Cichlids are substrate spawners that lay eggs on flat rocks, wood, or other cleaned surfaces. Both parents actively guard the eggs and fry, displaying excellent parental care. Their breeding behavior is one of the species' most rewarding characteristics.

Hemichromis lifalili is a spectacular dwarf cichlid that combines manageable size with some of the most intense coloration found in freshwater aquariums. Its brilliant red body, shimmering blue-green spotting, and fascinating parental behavior make the Lifalili Jewel Cichlid a standout choice for aquarists seeking a colorful and interactive West African centerpiece species.
