Limia perugiae, commonly known as Perugia’s Limia, is a colorful livebearing fish endemic to the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola. It occurs primarily in freshwater habitats of the southern Dominican Republic, where it inhabits streams, rivers, springs, ponds, and other shallow waters with aquatic vegetation and areas of gentle to moderate current. Like many Limia, it naturally occurs in warm, mineral-rich water and is particularly well suited to aquariums maintained on the harder, more alkaline side.
Adult Limia perugiae typically reaches about 2.5 to 3 inches in length, with females becoming noticeably larger and heavier-bodied than males. Mature males are especially attractive, displaying a silvery to pale golden body covered with numerous dark vertical bars that create a bold tiger-like pattern along the flanks. Depending on lighting and condition, the scales can develop beautiful blue, green, and golden iridescence, while the dorsal and caudal fins may show yellow, orange, and darker markings. Males also possess the modified anal fin, or gonopodium, characteristic of livebearers. Females are larger and more robust, with a softer silver-gray to olive coloration and less intense patterning. Mature males displaying together can become remarkably colorful and are considerably more striking than their relatively understated appearance in dealer tanks might suggest.
A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a small group, although 30 gallons or larger is preferable for an established colony. Limia perugiae is an active, social livebearer and does particularly well when maintained with multiple females for each male. The aquarium should provide open swimming space combined with dense plants, floating vegetation, driftwood, and other cover. Thick plant growth also provides important refuge for newborn fry and greatly increases juvenile survival.
Water conditions should remain warm, stable, and mineral-rich. Temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 7.0 to 8.2 and moderate to hard water preferred. Like mollies and many other Caribbean livebearers, Limia perugiae generally performs much better in water containing adequate calcium and magnesium than in extremely soft, acidic conditions. Salt is not required for successful maintenance.
Limia perugiae is an omnivorous grazer that naturally consumes algae, biofilm, plant material, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other available foods. In the aquarium it readily accepts quality flakes, small pellets, spirulina-based foods, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and blanched vegetables. Providing plenty of vegetable matter and algae-based foods alongside protein-rich foods helps maintain excellent body condition, coloration, and reproductive health.
Temperament is peaceful, active, and community-friendly. Perugia’s Limia can be maintained with other peaceful livebearers, rainbowfish, robust tetras, peaceful barbs, Corydoras, and other species that appreciate similar water chemistry. Males frequently display toward females and one another but serious aggression is uncommon when adequate space and cover are provided.
Breeding is extremely straightforward. Limia perugiae is a livebearer, with females giving birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. Females can produce broods regularly once mature, and dense vegetation provides young fish with protection from adults. Fry are relatively large at birth and readily accept finely crushed flakes, powdered foods, and newly hatched brine shrimp. Given suitable conditions, a small starter group can develop into an active breeding colony.
Limia perugiae is an underrated Caribbean livebearer that combines the ease and activity of familiar mollies and guppies with a much less commonly encountered wild-species appearance. The bold vertical patterning, metallic blue-gold sheen of mature males, peaceful personality, and easy breeding make Perugia’s Limia an excellent choice for planted community aquariums and aquarists interested in unusual livebearers.
