Ludwigia palustris ‘Green’ is a hardy aquatic stem plant derived from the widely distributed species Ludwigia palustris, which occurs naturally across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia in marshes, ponds, ditches, and slow-moving waterways. In nature it often grows emersed along muddy banks or submerged in shallow water, adapting easily to fluctuating water levels and variable light conditions.

In the aquarium, Ludwigia palustris ‘Green’ develops upright stems with small, oval to slightly rounded leaves arranged oppositely along the stem. As the name suggests, this cultivar maintains a bright to medium green coloration even under strong lighting, unlike red forms of Ludwigia palustris that develop intense red tones. The leaves are smooth and compact, giving the plant a tidy, bushy appearance when grown in groups. Under higher light and good nutrients, growth becomes dense and structured, while lower light may result in taller stems with wider spacing between leaves.

This plant is well suited to nano, medium, and large aquariums due to its manageable leaf size and moderate growth rate. It is typically planted in groups to form a midground or background cluster. Moderate to high lighting supports compact growth and vibrant green color, though it can adapt to moderate light once established. Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal.

Water conditions are flexible. Ludwigia palustris ‘Green’ grows well in temperatures between 68 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Stability and consistent maintenance are more important than exact parameters. While CO₂ supplementation is not required, it significantly enhances growth density and overall vigor.

The plant feeds from both the substrate and water column. Nutrient-rich substrate or root supplementation supports strong lower growth, while regular liquid fertilization helps maintain steady development and healthy foliage. Trimming is straightforward and necessary to encourage bushier growth. Cut tops can be replanted easily to propagate and thicken the group.

Ludwigia palustris ‘Green’ is compatible with most community fish and invertebrates. Its firm leaves are generally resistant to mild grazing, and its compact growth provides cover for small fish and shrimp. It works especially well in aquascapes that require a clean, bright green accent without red coloration.

Ludwigia palustris ‘Green’ is a versatile, easy-to-grow stem plant valued for its consistent green color, compact leaves, and adaptability. With adequate light and nutrients, it forms lush, tidy clusters that enhance both naturalistic and structured planted aquariums.
