Ludwigia ‘Red Skeleton’, scientifically known as Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata ‘Red’, is a cultivated stem plant known for its vibrant coloration and distinctive, finely serrated leaf shape. Native forms of this species come from Central and South America, but this variant has been selectively bred for aquarium use and is especially valued in high-end aquascaping.

Adult stems produce whorls of long, narrow leaves with deep serrations that give them a delicate, feather-like appearance. Under optimal conditions the coloration ranges from bright orange to deep crimson, with the most intense tones achieved under strong lighting. High-intensity light, pressurized CO₂, and a nutrient-rich substrate are essential for compact growth and rich coloration. Regular dosing of micronutrients—particularly iron—helps maintain vivid reds and healthy leaf structure.

In aquascapes, Ludwigia ‘Red Skeleton’ is most often used as a midground to background focal point, providing a fine-textured color contrast against green foliage. It grows quickly and requires frequent trimming to keep it dense and to prevent it from shading nearby plants. The ideal water temperature is 72 to 82°F (22 to 28°C), with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Propagation is straightforward: healthy stem cuttings can be replanted into the substrate to establish new growth.
