'Malaysian Red' Java Fern

Malaysian Red Java Fern, Microsorum sp. 'Malaysian Red', is a rare rheophytic fern native to Malaysia, where it grows attached to rocks and driftwood along shaded jungle streams and rivers. Like other members of the genus Microsorum, it naturally inhabits areas with gentle to moderate current, clean, well-oxygenated water, and consistently high humidity. The plant grows above and below the waterline depending on seasonal water levels, anchoring itself firmly to hard surfaces rather than rooting in substrate.

In the aquarium, Microsorum sp. 'Malaysian Red' develops long, narrow, slightly undulating leaves that emerge from a creeping rhizome. Young leaves display attractive reddish-bronze to copper coloration, gradually maturing to deep green while often retaining reddish highlights along the stems and undersides. The combination of narrow foliage and colorful new growth distinguishes this variety from traditional Java Fern and makes it one of the most desirable Microsorum forms available to planted aquarium enthusiasts.

Malaysian Red Java Fern should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe adhesive. The rhizome must remain exposed, as burying it in substrate will eventually cause rot. Once established, the plant anchors itself naturally and slowly spreads by producing additional rhizome growth.

Water conditions are highly forgiving. Temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. The species performs well under low to moderate lighting, though moderate light often produces the strongest coloration. CO₂ supplementation is not required but can improve growth rate and leaf size.

Microsorum sp. 'Malaysian Red' feeds primarily from the water column and benefits from regular liquid fertilization. Growth is slow to moderate, requiring very little maintenance once established. Mature leaves may occasionally produce adventitious plantlets along their tips, which can be removed and attached elsewhere for propagation.

This species is highly compatible with community fish and invertebrates. Its tough leaves resist grazing by most herbivorous fish, while its compact rhizomatous growth makes it ideal for attaching to driftwood and rockwork in both planted aquariums and naturalistic aquascapes.
