Nanochromis Splendens

Nanochromis splendens is a stunning West African dwarf cichlid from the fast-flowing rapids of the mid-Congo River. It is highly prized for its iridescent pastel shimmer and captivating colors that evolve dramatically with maturity.

Adults reach about 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm). Juveniles often appear plain and size seems modest, but mature males and females develop breathtaking hues—brilliant blues wash over the body, while fins and undersides flash red, orange, and yellow. Their bodies are slender, and as dominance hierarchies emerge, dominant males intensify in coloration and flare fins.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a bonded pair or small group. Provide strong water flow, open swimming areas, and plenty of rocky décor—caves, stones, or driftwood—to define territory and offer retreats. Subdued planting or shaded areas are appreciated, and good filtration with frequent partial water changes helps maintain water quality.

Water parameters: temperature 72 to 77-78°F (22 to 26 °C), pH slightly acidic to neutral, and soft to moderately hard water. Stability is key, as this species thrives in consistently clean, well-oxygenated water.

Feeding is easy. They are omnivorous and readily accept high-quality cichlid flakes or pellets, along with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Varied, protein-rich diet enhances growth and coloration.

Nanochromis splendens may show slight aggression—especially dominant males—but is generally peaceful with small, non-territorial tankmates. Best kept in species-only settings or with other delicate West African dwarf cichlids to avoid stress and interspecies conflicts.

Breeding occurs naturally in aquaria. They are substrate spawners, hiding eggs in caves or crevices. Parents guard eggs and fry, and fry typically navigate near the bottom until more confident. Pairs will bond tightly, often seen moving together throughout the tank.
