New Ranger Pleco, Pterygoplichthys sp., also commonly known as the Mini Ranger Pleco, is an undescribed South American catfish native to the Rio Nanay drainage near Iquitos, Peru. This recently introduced species has generated considerable excitement among pleco enthusiasts because it appears to remain dramatically smaller than the large sailfin and common plecos that dominate the aquarium trade. Current observations suggest an adult size of less than 6 inches, making it one of the most practical members of the genus for home aquariums.

The New Ranger Pleco inhabits shallow tributaries, flooded forest habitats, and slower sections of the Rio Nanay system where submerged wood, leaf litter, and biofilm-covered surfaces provide both shelter and feeding opportunities. These waters are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, with abundant natural grazing surfaces and seasonal fluctuations in water level.

Adult New Ranger Plecos develop the broad sucker mouth, armored body, and distinctive sailfin profile characteristic of Pterygoplichthys. Coloration consists of an attractive network of dark brown, black, and tan patterning that provides excellent camouflage among roots and submerged wood. Unlike many larger plecos that become bulky and imposing with age, the New Ranger Pleco retains a more refined appearance while remaining highly active and visible throughout the aquarium.

A tank of at least 30 gallons is suitable for juveniles, though 40 gallons or larger is recommended for long-term care. The aquarium should include driftwood, smooth stones, and shaded retreat areas where the fish can graze and rest. Moderate water movement and strong filtration are beneficial, while mature aquariums rich in biofilm are especially well suited to the species.

Water conditions should remain stable and clean. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water preferred. Like many Amazonian catfish, this species performs best in well-maintained aquariums with regular water changes and consistently high water quality.

Feeding is straightforward. New Ranger Plecos are highly effective algae and biofilm grazers that spend much of the day browsing surfaces throughout the aquarium. They readily consume soft algae, diatoms, and natural biofilm, making them useful members of planted and community aquariums. However, algae alone is not sufficient for long-term health. They should be supplemented with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, quality sinking pellets, Repashy-style gel foods, and occasional vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and squash.

Temperament is peaceful and community-friendly. New Ranger Plecos coexist well with tetras, Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, rainbowfish, and other non-aggressive species. They generally ignore tankmates and spend most of their time grazing, resting, or exploring hard surfaces throughout the aquarium.

Breeding has not been documented in captivity, and much of the species' natural history remains unknown due to its undescribed status. Most specimens currently available in the hobby are wild collected from the Rio Nanay region of Peru.

Pterygoplichthys sp. "New Ranger" is an exciting recent addition to the aquarium hobby, combining the algae-eating ability and hardy nature of larger plecos with a far more manageable adult size. Its attractive patterning, peaceful disposition, and reported sub-6-inch growth potential make it an appealing option for aquarists who want the benefits of a Pterygoplichthys without the enormous space requirements of its larger relatives.
