Orange Finned Kyathit Danio, Danio kyathit, is a colorful Southeast Asian cyprinid native to northern Myanmar, where it occurs in tributaries of the upper Ayeyarwady River system, particularly in Kachin State. It inhabits clear, shallow streams and smaller flowing waterways with gravel, stones, and mixed substrates surrounded by dense vegetation. These environments experience seasonal changes in temperature and flow and are typically clean, well oxygenated, and considerably more dynamic than the still-water habitats associated with many tropical aquarium fish.

Adult Orange Finned Kyathit Danios typically reach about 1.5 to 2 inches in length. The body is slender, streamlined, and built for active swimming, with a warm golden to olive-gold base coloration covered in dark blue-black spots and broken horizontal markings. What makes this form especially attractive is the intense orange to reddish-orange coloration that develops throughout the fins, particularly the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Mature, well-conditioned fish can develop extremely vivid orange finnage that contrasts beautifully against the dark body pattern and metallic golden background. Depending on the individual, the markings along the flanks may range from distinct spots to irregular broken stripes, giving each fish a slightly different appearance.

A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a proper school, with longer aquariums preferred because of their energetic swimming behavior. Orange Finned Kyathit Danios should be maintained in groups of at least six, although eight to twelve or more creates a much more impressive display and encourages natural social behavior. The aquarium should provide plenty of open swimming space combined with plants, driftwood, rounded stones, and areas of moderate current. A secure lid is strongly recommended, as these active danios are capable jumpers.

Water conditions should remain clean and well oxygenated. Temperatures between 68 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, making this species somewhat better suited to cooler conditions than many typical tropical community fish. A pH range of approximately 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water are appropriate. Moderate water movement, strong filtration, and regular water changes help replicate the clean, flowing streams of their native habitat.

Orange Finned Kyathit Danios are omnivorous and easy to feed. In nature they consume small insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, zooplankton, and other tiny aquatic organisms. In the aquarium they readily accept quality flakes, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized foods. Regular frozen or live foods help bring out the strongest orange coloration in the fins and keep the fish in excellent breeding condition.

Temperament is peaceful but extremely active. Orange Finned Kyathit Danios make excellent community fish with other energetic, non-aggressive species that appreciate similar temperatures and water movement. Suitable tankmates include other danios, rasboras, small barbs, hillstream loaches, peaceful catfish, and similarly active community species. Very slow-moving or timid fish may be overwhelmed by their constant activity, particularly at feeding time.

Breeding is possible in captivity and follows the typical danio pattern. They are egg scatterers that release small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, mosses, or spawning media. Adults provide no parental care and will readily consume eggs and fry, so a separate breeding aquarium or protective spawning substrate is recommended when attempting to raise offspring. Fry initially require very small foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

Danio kyathit is an outstanding alternative to more familiar danio species, combining the hardiness and energetic schooling behavior of the group with an intricate spotted pattern and brilliant orange-red finnage. When maintained in a large school with clean, oxygen-rich water, the Orange Finned Kyathit Danio creates a constantly moving display of gold, dark patterning, and fiery orange color.
